Protestors storm capital

Much like how conservatives only care about debt when a Democrat is in the White House, where was this concern over our police state when the president was demanding that governors “beat the crap” out of protesters? Remember when Bill Barr was having unidentified goons throwing people into unmarked vans during the summer of 2020? I don’t recall a certain poster calling for reform after George Floyd was murdered (maybe I just missed it). For years now we’ve had debates on this board about police reform and yet usually the conversation devolves into another tribal fight where people divide along predictable partisan lines.

I think many of us would like to see some changes with how American citizens are monitored and policed. I’d personally love to see the Pat Act expire, the DHS abolished/severely reformed, police unions crushed, and the war on drugs ended. But it’s going to take a concerted effort over the long-term to enact the necessary changes to our judicial system and law enforcement. And it might require you going against your tribe at times at inopportune times politically.
100% agreed.

A March 7 Facebook post (direct link, archived link) makes a claim about Jacob Chansley, widely known as the QAnon shaman, and his presence at the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

"Never before seen video of January 6 shows Jacob Chansley, the QAnon Shaman, being led through the Capitol by police the entire time that he was in the building," the post reads.

Our rating: False

A Capitol Police spokesperson said Chansley – who also goes by the name Jake Angeli – was not accompanied at all times by police in the Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021. A court document and firsthand account show that police repeatedly asked Chansley to leave the building.

In late February, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy gave Fox News host Tucker Carlson exclusive access to 41,000 hours of surveillance footage from the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. Carlson aired clips of that footage on his show, “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” for the first time on March 6.

The video referenced in the post was from that footage and shows various clips of Chansley walking down the halls of the Capitol building while Capitol Police follow him.

But contrary to the post’s claim, the Capitol Police did not accompany Chansley through the building at all times, according to Tim Barber, a Capitol Police spokesperson.

A court document, firsthand account and other video footage also support Barber's statement and show that Capitol Police repeatedly asked Chansley to leave the building.

Chansley was arrested Jan. 9, 2021 – three days after the Capitol riot – and faced with six charges. He pleaded guilty to obstruction of an official proceeding and was sentenced to 41 months in prison in November 2021.

A statement from the government, signed by Chansley and his attorney to be "true and accurate," says that Chansley unlawfully entered the Capitol building through a broken down door with a mob of rioters. A video clip of the initial break-in to the building does not show Chansley accompanied by the police as he enters the building.

The group then moved to the second floor of the Senate side of the building where it was met by several Capitol Police officers who instructed them “to peacefully leave the building,” according to the statement. Chansley challenged Capitol Police officer Keith Robishaw to let them pass, ultimately “using his bullhorn to rile up the crowd.”

Chansley then "entered the gallery of the Senate alone" and “proceeded to scream obscenities,” the statement says.

After Chansley moved to the Senate chamber, Robishaw asked him multiple times to leave, according to the statement. In the HBO documentary “Four Hours at the Capitol,” Robishaw recounts being the only police officer in the chamber at the time.

"And, in my mind, I was like, ‘I can’t do anything,’ you know?" Robishaw said. "I can only do is, you know, shout orders, and if they listen, great. If they don’t, I can’t force them. I’m by myself."

Several law enforcement officers then joined Robishaw to clear the rioters from the chamber, according to the statement.

In his show, Carlson claimed Capitol Police acted as tour guides for Chansley. Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger said in an internal department memo that the claim was both “outrageous and false,” as USA TODAY reported.

Yes! I mean, who are you going to believe? A police spokesperson or your own lying eyes? Nevermind that no one has yet shown a single video clip where Chansley was unaccompanied by police because we can take the spokesperson's word for it that all the cameras everywhere missed Chansley's solo escapade.

How about the plea deal Chansley signed?

My comment wasn't directed at the guilt or innocence of Chansley, only the silliness of the fact check relying entirely on the word of a police spokesperson when all available evidence tells a different story. He's still guilty and he should spend a long time in prison but I don't believe the video is fake.

I have absolutely no faith in the veracity of someone's signed confession, especially when it comes as part of a plea deal.
I think the better the representation, the more likely the plea deal is fair. Chansley's attorney (Al Watkins) has resources and associates to spare.

4 minutes out of the entire time he was inside the Capital. Would you expect Tucker to show any footage that undermined the narrative he was driving? Do you expect Tucker to present a honest account? Was it Tucker’s goal to provide an honest account?

“The televised footage shows Chansley’s movements only from approximately 2:56 p.m. to 3:00 p.m,” prosecutors said in a 10-page court filing connected to the seditious conspiracy trial of five Proud Boys leaders, including Dominic Pezzola, who used a riot shield to initiate the breach of the Capitol.

“Prior to that time, Chansley had, amongst other acts, breached a police line at 2:09 p.m. with the mob, entered the Capitol less than one minute behind Pezzola during the initial breach of the building, and faced off with members of the U.S. Capitol Police for more than thirty minutes in front of the Senate Chamber doors while elected officials, including the Vice President of the United States, were fleeing from the chamber,” they continued.

The footage aired by Carlson earlier this month showed Chansley walking through Capitol hallways accompanied by police officers, who at some moments appeared to be facilitating his movements — even opening a Senate-wing door for him at one point — and certainly weren’t trying to subdue him. But the clips didn’t indicate what time of day the footage came from or any of the context about the interactions.

……Chansley was not some passive, chaperoned observer of events for the roughly hour that he was unlawfully inside the Capitol,” prosecutors wrote.

Prosecutors emphasized that U.S. Capitol Police officers had been overwhelmed at that point in the riot, resorting to triage to minimize the damage of the riot.

“For a period that afternoon, those defending the Capitol were in triage mode — trying to deal with the most violent element of those unlawfully present, holding those portions of the Capitol that had not yet been seized by rioters, and protecting those Members and staffers who were still trapped in the Capitol,” prosecutors wrote.

What I expect is evidence. The Capitol Police had full access to all of this footage, and police often release footage to counter false narratives. There are countless examples of motorists claiming police doing something racist only for the police to release the body cam footage showing an officer acting professionally throughout the incident. Releasing footage is a thing police can do.

Tucker showed a bunch of video footage of Chansley being escorted around by police. If the Capitol Police say that isn't the full picture, then show me. Show me the picture. Show me the video. If the best the Capitol Police can do is trot out a spokesperson who insists we trust what they say then I'm sorry but that is not good enough to counter video evidence of the opposite.

Maybe… just maybe… don’t go into the Capitol without permission?

When I went to DC on vacation, I had to write my rep to get a tour of the Capitol. If you don’t want a tour you still have to make reservations and wait in line and go through security. It’s not like you can just… walk in. So maybe just maybe… don’t just walk into the Capitol building when a raging mob is destroying stuff, smearing **** on the walls, killing cops, and chanting, “hang Mike pence?” Right? Like… I don’t remember what I was doing on Jan 6, 2021. Probably work. These insurrectionists could’ve gone to a million different places on that day. They could’ve stayed ant home and watched sports. They could’ve gone out to eat. They could’ve gone to Disneyland with their families. Instead, they went into the Capitol building. Maybe… they shouldn’t have?

your actions have consequences. Lock these MAGA losers up. We are a nation of law and order, right?
