Quebec soccer federation bans turbans

So far poll results are 55% yes and 45% no.
My personal opinion as part time soccer referee and player is that we should follow FIFA rules in cases like that. I don't think turbans would be a problem in any other sport but in soccer players use heads to hit the ball, pass, score or defend. Imagine ball heading to the net at about foot higher then head level. Defender with turban will have unfair advantage trying to stop or deflect it from entering the goal. I do not think it is huge safety concern like hijab in muslim women soccer - which eventually was solved by using magnetic straps which allows hijab to get lose in case of choking hazard so appart from unfair advantage I do not see any other concerns.
Discuss.
What do you think NBA would do if some team would draft Sikh player who would wear turban during the game?

p.s mods, please correct title, lol.

If anything, a turban would be a hindrance, not an advantage. Even in the scenario you described, I don't see an advantage.

Yeah to me this seems not too crazy.

Some Americans might not know: relatively recently, Canadian Sikh police officers working with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police ('Mounties') were allowed to wear turbans on the job-- which went against the former-requirement of NEEDING to wear the hat. Like, there was a pretty big debate regarding that-- but the RCMP decided to ignore their century-long tradition, and accommodate to Sikh officers in their force.

They had him and one other office on-hand during a NHL Finals game, saluting. Pretty cool :)

I suppose a turban functions as a hat. But wearing one while playing soccer? Um, no. If cultural/religious symbols mean THAT much to me, then I probably shouldn't play a sport where I would have to pick up a long, sweat-drenched, piece of cloth every time I fall down or hit a header, then have everyone wait for me to fix it back into a turban.

Sorry, by not too crazy, I meant that their decision to not allow it. To me it seems dumb for them to expect a soccer federation to make this ruling. Don't know if you got that. Carry on.

Only the Mounties part was a response to your post. The rest of it was just a general comment on the topic. Very general, as I'm not planning to stick around for a debate about the appropriate handling of personal traditions. Too time consuming.

Good.

Wearing a turban while playing soccer makes no sense.

Im sure all the muslims in canada will be pissed off, call us the great satan, and ignore the abominations committed by their own people. "Waaahhhhh??? Those sons of bitches?! Won't let us wear turbans in soccer??? Mother *******! Another bombing in the ME? Meh. All well. Another innocent American or British soldier killed? Oops. Well we are tolerant and peace loving."

If the islams don't like it then go take your bible back to Arabia and praise Mohammad. Mohammad is great. Then you can teach us all about tolerance as you attack our embassies, blow up schools, wear black masks to cover your coward faces, and make raped women marry their rapists. Freaking Islam. I just wish they'd stay out of we barbaric westernized peoples' lives. If the west sucked so bad then why are so many "tolerant" muslims invading Europe and the USA?

I get so tired of having to tolerate their crap. See them demand that we bend over backwards for them. Have our culture and laws changed, all for them. When I see no give from them. It seems like the more we try and help, the more we are attacked and blown up. I keep hearing how the vast majority are tolerant peace lovers who aren't terrorists. Time to put up or shut up. Why are we the only ones standing up for raped women? The killing of innocents? Human rights? Time for Islam to climb out of the sewer and actually stand up for something.

If Muslims are so great, DO SOMETHING. Want to be known for something other than terrorism? Then do it!!! Finally fight radicalism. Get rid of the rapists. Get rid of those jokes in so many of your countries. Stand up for something other than cheap *** words and no actual actions. Want peace? Fight evil. No one ever defeated hitler by sitting on their asses and saying that they were tolerant and peace loving. Stop supporting radicalism.

It is about Sikhs. Not muslims. Islam does not require men to wear turbans.

The mechanics of it don't work that way. Plus, you're already allowed to wear hats in soccer.

Raises a good point I hadn't thought about. If they have a custom-headwear thing, and it's inspected before every game, then it shouldn't be too crazy. I think their main worry could be something akin to boxers putting Plaster of Paris in their boxing gloves.

This is protective headgear after concussion, trauma, etc. Does not give you any unfair advantage. Turban on the other hand is big and increases your playable body surface quite significantly. I guess it would not matter if players on both teams wear turbans.

No. How enormous a turban are we taking here? Would wearing snow boots give you an advantage also? More playable surface area there.

I think Beckerman's got a turban hidden in there somewhere.

I honestly don't know what the technical requirements of a turban are, but could there be such a thing as a "sport turban" which might be less obtrusive?

It does not need to be enormous. Just yesterday we played a game and there was a situation which got me thinking about it again. It was a cross ball in our box and even if I jumped high trying to defend it it barely grazed top of my head and player behind me got to the ball and had a shot on goal ( he missed ). If I had turban like the one sikh kids are using when they play I would have certainly hit it with top of the turban and deflected that ball. Minor things but can have influence.

There's a big difference between "influence" and "advantage".

I played organized soccer from the time I was 5 though high school, and for about 8 years as an adult. I would not want a big knot on my forehead. For every 1 scenario where it was advantageous, there would be 100 scenarios where it was a major hindrance.

Small influence like that can make a difference in win or loss in soccer. I think it is important to create equal opportunities for everybody, that's it. If religious laws are so important for sikhs, then there is bunch of other sports where they can play with turbans without any issues.
