How many head coaches have won an nba championship while still coaching at their first head coaching gig? Follow up how many years into the gig did it take to win?

Yes this tread is about Corbin. I like him but we need a coach with some exp.

I just thought of one spolestra with Miami. I think that is his first gig maybe wrong.

Pat Riley, Phil Jackson, Rudy Tomjonovich, Red Auerbach and Greg Popovich all come to mind within the first five seconds of thinking about this.

Coach Name - Season # of First Championship

Erik Spoelstra - 4
Phil Jackson - 2
Greg Popovich - 3
Rudy Tomjanovich - 3
Pat Riley - 1
Billy Cunningham - 6
Paul Westhead - 1
Tommy Heinsohn - 5
Al Attles - 6
Larry Costello - 3
Bill Russell - 2
Alex Hannum - 2
George Senesky - 1
Al Cervi - 6
John Kundla - 1
Les Harrison - 2

The list is in rough reverse chronological order, and may not be complete (it probably is though).

16 of 28 coaches who've won NBA championships have done so with their first team.

Get where you are going and you got what you wanted.

Just wanted to chime in with this. IMO Corbin is and was the chosen one in Utah as far as succeeding Jerry and the plan was only F'd up so much because of the newly found problems of Okur and Williams.

Nobody expected Jerry to quit but he did. KOC was left holding the bag and what he did then was something that will leave ripples for a long time in the NBA, the Deron Trade. Corbin had his 1 1/2 seasons so far and if he can't get it done nobody including me can save him. But in the meantime I probably will find a way to stick some pro-TY in there. So suck it, haters!

Thanks guys I will admit I am wrong. I thought a lot of coaches had coached else where before winning the championship. I have more hope for Ty just hope he stops mumbling.

All those coaches coached stacked teams from the get-go though.

I remember him mumbling during the halftime interviews when he was an assistant.

A more interesting question would be how many 1st time coaches took a non-playoff team (the year prior to when he joined) and won a championship?

I think Ty deserves some more time. Even though I wasnt impressed with some of the rotations. Mainly Favors not seeing more time. The bell thing. The Howard thing. Evans not playing. But I think that has to do with pressure to play these high paid vets. I blame management for not making a move to remove that pressure. I know people think he should just sit Al or something, but it doesnt always work like that. Al was an investment and we had to see if he could get over some of his mistakes. Also Im sure behind closed doors management talk about these things. Like which direction the team is headed and if they need to showcase Al and shop his value. Believe it not they might do these things even though it hurts the team in the short term.

I just dont think all of the rotation issues should be blamed on him. I would like to see what he has when the roster is a little more settled.

However, I am worried a little bit that my assesment is wrong and he has developed Sloan tendencies already. Where he is more likely to favor a vet for all the wrong reasons. I didnt like how Jerry stuck to that plan far too often. I would like a coach like Thibodeau. Where he isnt afraid to sit an overpaid Boozer.

I hope what we seen from Corbin is nothing more than just some shopping being done by the team. Or maybe it is a Sloan tendency, buy he ends up scrapping it and making his own way. I think that Ty might feel a little pressure right now to coach like Sloan. He is on a short leash right now. And he is feeling his way through.

I think it is also a positive to have a black coach. Only if he turns out good though. The reason is because it would likely help attract black free agents. And it helps with our image of being a boring place to go play, on and off the court.

I get showcasing Al for a trade...but we are past that. If Al is still on the team this fall, Corbin needs to do what is best for the team, and that is Jefferson coming off the bench, 14 million, trade value be damned.

They have to figure out what they have with Favors and Kanter, so they can decide what to do with Millsap. They can't do that with Jefferson playing 35+ mins a night.

Yes, sir!

But, I doubt Corbin has that kind of balls.
