Rank The Assets (NYK)

Too much to list all of them, but top for me would be Barrett, unprotected Knicks picks and Grimes. I’d be very happy with Barrett, Grimes and 4 unprotected Knicks picks. Some filler needed (Fournier?), preferably directly rerouted elsewhere.

I listed them all for you...

another thing about these rankings….everyone is ranking the more distant picks more highly. I understand why…but I feel teams/GM’s think the opposite. 2029 is long ways away.

1. Barrett
2. Toppin
3. Grimes
4. All Knicks own unprotected picks
5. All the protected first round picks the Knicks own.
6. Quickley
7. Reddish
7. All the Knicks’ second round picks.
8. All the other **** that we don’t want.

That’s the entire point. It is so long away. Anything can happen. Why did Minnesota only put protections on the 2029 pick?

Right…but when GM’s think anything can happen, they’re probably thinking “am I going to have a job in 7 years?”

It’s a way different value proposition when you’re a fan of a team/will be a fan forever versus someone trying to keep a job in a hostile industry.

I'm sure it's a bit like businesses generally. When your assets are tied up for 7 years, you lose a lot of flexibility.

I think it’s more about having something more tangible and more readily available. Yeah….you might get something really amazing if you wait 7 years for something. But idk, you might just really like Grimes and prefer him instead of the mystery box. Really, it’s more of a mystery box with another mystery box inside. You don’t know the draft position or if the player you’re going to draft is going to be any good. So while we can dream about the scenario where it turns out to this super awesome pick, the alternative of it not being good or underwhelming is probably more likely. It’s easy to see why a GM would prefer a player or more immediate draft pick instead. The people making decisions can’t count on even being there 7 years from now.

MIN just made this decision with McDaniels. And I can’t really blame them. McDaniels is real and chances are he’s better than whatever that 2029 pick ends up being.
