Realistic expectations for Exum, our future star

lol i'll take it you're fine with how effective the sets are at the moment and the adjustments being made as each game goes on and we stink it up more and more. Are you comfortable with the offense producing a lot of jump shots when our players are poor shooters at best ? Happy with seeing Kanter shoot long range jump shots constantly ? Do you think the players are playing hard all the time ? At the moment i see lethargy and confusion. Are you not at all concerned that our level of play seems to be gradually worse compared to the early part of the season ? I've followed the Jazz for 20 years btw thanks for the impressive "basketball talk"

A genuine Australian Jazz fan who now gets to follow 2 Aussies in the team, respect mate. Now while I understand that coach could try getting Exum more involved I would like to see some fire in the player himself. So far he seems to just be trailing on...

60% of Kanter's shots come from inside 10 feet. 20% from 16 feet to the 3pt line. His TS% is better than his career average. Don't let facts get in the way of your narrative.

Jazz are playing worse because teams know what they're doing now. Offensively, the Jazz have failed to executive reads off the initial option properly. Hayward has mentioned this on more than one occasion. This means they know the options are there. They're just failing to do them. That's the sign of a team whose average age is 24.

Jazz are actually rebounding better than they did earlier in the year. "Playing hard" and being "lethargic" seems more like a player thing than a coach thing. I don't think you could ever put Booker into those two categories. I also don't see confusion. I see bad decisions, which, coincidentally, you'll see Snyder tell his players quite often. Coaches can hold players to higher standards all you want. Won't mean a thing until the players do the same.

Despite everything that DownUnder is saying, as it stands today, the Jazz can replace Exum with JP Gibson and not miss a beat. I don't buy the theory that it's all the coaching staff's plan, since Hood plays with more aggression and intensity than 90% of the team. Quin simply needs to instruct Exum to have at least one play per game where he attacks the rim with everything he has. You don't learn if you don't make mistakes. I want to see that TO number TRIPLE.

After watching Exum in the Spurs game, I think he is finally being allowed to penetrate more and even had a couple of plays called for him so that he could develop his skills.

And I'm so glad Kanter is playing with the second unit now instead of Hayward because:
1.) His defense isn't as much of a liability
2.) Regarding offense, the marginal benefit of him playing against backup power forwards is greater than that of Hayward playing against backup SG/SFs
3.) Hayward doesn't get to hog the ball and Exum can actually spend more time developing as a point guard instead of a shooting guard who stands in the corner and watches Hayward dribble

Yeah you would almost have to MAX Matthews which would be a LOT more than Hayward in order to pry him away from Portland who are contenders at 16-4. That isn't going to nor should it happen. Dude is going to make more than Parsons, I just see Portland paying that without blinking knowing that when Lillard comes due, Matthews at 17 million is tradeable. . .
So make Portland pay max to keep him. I agree Wesley is a longshot. That doesn't mean we don't make an offer. The worst he can say is no, then go back to Portland and make them pay up. And then it's on to the other options like Carroll, etc. DMC is also playing on a contender, but that team could fall apart a bit if Millsap also leaves. Paul is WAY underpaid and is going to want a big increase. DMC is tight with Snyder, so it could happen. And if it doesn't? Then go to plan C or look at trades. There is a pretty decent crop of FA's this summer.

I want to see that TO number TRIPLE.
I wonder if there are exceptions to this rule. A precedent would be Stockton. His TO per 36 varied from 3.6-2.9 for his entire career. 3.6 his rookie year yes, but 3.4 in his 10th season as well.
If you want to look at someone who came out of high school, Kobe varies from 3.7-2.5. His rookie being 3.7, 2nd year 2.7.
Looking at someone we don't want him to become, CJ Miles ranges from 2.7-1.6. His first year was 1.6, 2nd 2.7 and then is fairly consistent below 2.

Dante is at 2 per 36.

I'm going to stop there. I do think we agree that Exum needs to drive and shoot more.

Still scratching my head about this one. The one move of Lindsey's I didn't like...
Carroll was an energy "bench" player. His game exploded under Quin's tutelage in Atlanta, particularly his 3PT shooting. Remember, too, the idea was to weaken the bench so the draft pick would land as high as possible. DMC doesn't become the player he is now under Corbin last season, despite what some say about Corbin's "success" in developing the jazz players.
