Renegotiate John Collins

I thought Collins played hard for the most part and his stats were OK. But then you compare his stats to guys the Jazz don't want over the last few games like Yurt7, Luka, Bazely, Potter and Kenny it gets sobering very quickly. Maybe the Jazz treat him like the Knicks did Evan Fournier and let him rot on the bench. I bet the five guys annual salary did not equal Collins and arguably they were as productive.

I disagree strongly. They weren't close to as productive. You can always look at stats from a couple of exceedingly meaningless games, but Collins played through the whole season carrying a significantly heavier load than any of those guys.

I think you’re overthinking getting a $17 million raise. I’m sure he can get an $8 million deal even if he has a down season.

But yeah, it’s worth thinking through the issue. He can’t really get a bigger raise than the max, and if he does have a total outlier season (he suddenly becomes a legit modern 4 and/or gets really good at defense), his extension number next year doesn’t require cap-space to re-up.

I can see some downsides to your point but I mostly see this as a no-brainer for Collins. I think the biggest hitch is that I don’t know if it’s legal (I think you have to extend for several years in order to renegotiate… but maybe not)?
The CBAFAQ-site still has the old CBA so what I am saying goes by this one. I have not heard about any changes to the R&E-process in the current CBA, but there might be something I have missed.

According to CBAFAQ, a four or five year deal can be renegotiated 3 years after it was signed. It does not need to be extended at the same time so as I read it, we could get offer Collind the full max for next season and have it expire after this year. If we add on more years, the salary can be 40% less in the first new year of the deal. I can`t find any clause that says the the extension has to be a minimum number of years. When we R&Ed Jordan Clarkson last year, we only added on two years so we know that two more years is possible.
