Republicans and Fascism

Florida’s “Ministry of Education” will smote Woke, or, as some would say, eradicate dissent and academic freedom. Without academic freedom, without tenure, you might as well just say “no independent thinkers need apply”. Of course, we’ve made our politics juvenile, and toxic, we treat science as if science were a virus itself, inflating the scientists into…..ELITES! God help us, intelligence can only take us so far, Marjorie Taylor Greene’s the way forward for our nation. In reality, guys like DeSantis are the ones history remembers for all the wrong reasons.

You know America hasn’t solved its troubles yet, when a leader in the effort to simply ignore the Constitution and overturn an election, is now chairing the House Judiciary Committee.

“It is Jordan’s responsibility to come fully clean about himself, including his active participation in the greatest attack on our democracy since the Civil War. Until he does, the last thing he should be doing is investigating anyone else.”

In The Color Purple, the lead character refers to men's genitalia as looking like an ugly frog (IIRC). Is that pornography? Could it be interpreted to be so by an official who wanted to see the book removed from the shelf?
Don't forget the Pullitzer prize winning graphic novel Maus, which has the utterly scandalous depiction of a topless female mouse in a concentration camp.

I haven’t read the past couple of pages, but would you stop involving me with whatever nonsense is gripping your fevered mind at the moment? Thanks.
It was your post Red. Teachers worrying about being charged with felonies for materials in their libraries was a line you initiated.

DeSantis may think he’s winning in his war on education, but he will fail and this war will fail.

No. Read the law. That would clearly not qualify.

Most of these responses have no idea about the law and try to dismiss what you are saying. Parents are seeing what is happening at public schools and are looking for an alternative. As I have posted before, I have a daughter in a public high school and a son in a private school. Our son's school just sent out an email yesterday about people looking for another option in his grade level:

This is one of many private schools in a small area. His school has 2 classes of 22 children in the 6th grade a total of 44. As of now, 4 children have not renewed for next year, leaving 4 open spots. 44 completed applications plus 72 new applications in just February...The waitlist is 116 currently. This is happening at the Baptist, Lutheran, Catholic, Non-Denominational and the other Christian school. Also, because the school choice scholarships have expanded and will cover most of the tuition ($8000), making the switch easier for everyone to afford. There is a cap on income someone can make to get this scholarship, so it's not for wealthy people.

We are lucky when we got in. My daughter is at a public school to play volleyball but next year she will be doing dual enrollment and will be taking all her college classes at home. So she will only go to school for volleyball practice for 3 months. This is also happening with her friends as well. They would rather get all their school work done early and go hang out or work. I know I'm telling you some anecdotes, but I feel like this is happening in other places than my community.

How young are you? This has been going on since the late 1950s.

I completely understand, and what you are experiencing is common in my community as well.

My kid is in 4th grade in public school but the teachers have been there forever and the community is very involved. I don't have any issues with curriculum but I really dislike the schedule being imposed by the district. When I was in elementary school we had 3 recess breaks. We had a morning recess for 15 minutes. We had a 30 minute lunch break that included eating time, and we had another 15 minute afternoon recess. My kids school has cut one of the recesses entirely. He gets one 15 minute morning recess, followed by one 15 minute recess around noon after which the bell rings to call all the kids in to eat before they go straight back to the class. Our public school district has cut the amount of recess for elementary school aged kids in half.

As for your daughter doing dual enrollment, I think that is great. I'm planning on a similar course of action when my son gets a little older.

Or maybe people are tired of the public school system and what comes with it. Public schools in 2023 are not even close to how they were in 1950, 1999(When I graduated) or even 2010. Now schools are telling parents to enroll them elsewhere. Good thing Florida has a bully scholarship that helps with these situations!

"She told Local 10 that violence in and around the school is overwhelming administrators, with those in charge urging her to enroll her three children in a different school.

Her mother claims that her two older children have also been bullied during their short stint at the school, adding that they have done nothing to help since they joined on January 9."

True. There are many area where the schools used to be better funded.

Back in the 1970s, we kids were told to handle bullies ourselves. I can appreciate why you'd want to return to that.

Him being dismissive of what you have to say, ignoring what was actually posted and the details.
9yr old girl vs teenage boy and another boy. Yeah she should handle these bullies herself. Seriously you just post to argue not to discuss. You are doing exactly what claim others do. No value.

The video of the bullies she should just take on:

That's a measure of how times have changed. It was never OK for high school kids to pick on 9-year-olds, but we didn't expect the schools to handle it. Those of us with working parents had to figure this stuff out, whether it was going to school in a group, taking alternate paths, tracking down their parents and shaming them, etc. Now we expect schools to ameliorate hunger, provide social work, mainstream those who have trouble with factory learning styles, deal with parents who take their children's side (mine did once or twice, but it was very unusual) in addition to teaching. Your nostalgic comments about '1950, 1999, ... 2010' are a complete failure of perspective. By being glib, I was actually being kind to you. You have no clue what it was like.

Of course there are many parents who want to avoid public schools, and send their kids to schools where they can expel kids easily and don't need to make provisions for kids that learn slowly or differently. It's so much easier on everyone to leave behind the kids that only public schools take and keep. I went to a mix of public schools and Catholic schools, depending on my parents and grandparents resources at the time. It was easy to see the difference, and the reasons for it.

As for @Al-O-Meter, I spent years trying to have reasonable discussion with him, only to have outright lies returned to me. The last straw was when he made a stupid claim about the definition of racism changing in 2015 in school textbooks, so I offered him about 6 links before and after 2015 to show the definition had not changed. He then lied about the contents of one of the links I provided, as if I hadn't checked. By all means, seek solace wherever you can find it, even with a liar and a bigot. However, seeking common cause with him will undermine your claims to be moderate and seek only truth.

Sometimes you handle bullies in other ways than by taking them on.

More evidence that our government on both sides are siding with big industry. This rail industry has been pulling strings in government for decades. It doesn’t matter who is in power. Go ahead and debate who messed up worse and with what legislation there plenty of blame on both sides. From deregulation to blocking strikes this is completely bi partisan fascism.

It’s way past time to start pointing the finger at the government as a whole and quit pointing it at each other. We aren’t being represented.

Yeah anyone paying attention knows this country is run by corporations. Look at the bank bailouts, the auto industry, hell even all the excess spending and tax cuts and breaks given through lobbying and back-door deals that come to light. The bridge to nowhere in Alaska. **** like that goes on all the time. We have allowed a system to develop where whoever throws the most money at the individual legislators gets whatever they want. Lobbyist control Washington, not us. They listen far more to them than they do the voting tax-payers.

Yet still constant bickering and circle jerking going on here. Even full on support and the defense of pharmaceutical industries when someone displays some skepticism. It’s very strange. My very first post was about how corrupt our government was as a whole, yet I was very quickly labeled and trashed like others here with any opposing perspectives.
