What's new

Ric Bucher reporting Jazz have signed Randy Foye to a 1-year deal

1. I'll believe Marvin can shoot when he proves last season wasn't an outlier. Over the last 4 season, he's a 35% 3 point shooter. And 2 of those years he shot 30 and 33. I'll happily concede last year's 38 gives me hope.

2. "Mismatched" only refers to my presumption Hayward/Marvin start. I don't believe for one second Marvin will come off the bench. And a bench unit that features Foye/Burks at the 2/3 isn't going to work. Hence, mismatched. Burks might surprise, but he's nowhere near big enough (size, not length) to effectively guard the position.

I wanted a 3 who could shoot. Didn't have to be anyone great. The dream scenario was somebody who could effectively play for 18 - 20 minutes. That would leave Hayward/Marvin/Burks to fill in the remaining 76 based on hot hand/matchups. As of now, we've got 4 guys who basically have to average 25.

I bitch and moan with the best of 'em but Jesus Billy, if you're gonna bitch and moan, at least have an alternative in mind. You're obviously not happy with the roster as currently constructed but throw me a bone, us a bone, about who would have tickled your fancy.

I haven't looked over the rest of the FA market. And I've already made it clear that there are scenarios where the foursome could work. My complaint has more to do with practicality.

There's no reason why we had to lock up Foye now. So all I want to know is what's the plan? He's not really a great fit on paper unless you're going to shake up the 4 in the rotations and/or play either Foye/Burks at the point. Seems like KOC is jumping the gun. But maybe there's a vision I'm not seeing.

All he really has to do is bring the ball up the court without turning it over. Foye seems to be a guy that has some propensity to jack up ill conceived shots but if he brings the ball up, dumps it off and moves he will be a significant upgrade over either of the current backup points. Our starting PG didn't log a lot of real point minutes the last several years either. Clearly KOC is not following a model of using a ball dominant playmaker at this position.

Don't buy it. The PG position is a lot more nuanced. If we use Foye at PG, we'll find out. Probably the hard way, but hopefully I'm wrong.

You do realize you can make almost all of these same arguments against Mo Williams as well? He really has not played as a true PG for a while. He was not really the PG for the Cavs and he played a lot of minutes at SG throughout his carreer. Including last season. Hayward could be a SG that can initiate the offense. He can pass off of the dribble, attack the basket, and create his own shot. Burks may even be a better fit at that if he learns to pass it more. I believe both of those players could run the pick and roll.

It seems to me both Foye and Mo give this team something they are missing. And that is an outside shooter to put on the floor with our slasher/playmaker and our bigs. Tinsley and Watson were a problem when on the floor because of their lack of outside shooting threat. Especially Watson who is an absolutely pathetic shooter.

And I don't buy Mo is going to be a better PG for us. At least not yet. But we'll see. At least he's been successful in that department, if hardly elite.

My 10 cent psychoanalysis is we've been so starved for shooters that any improvement in that department by any player makes everyone think we improved. My opinion is the guys we got have their deficiencies too, and most importantly I'm not seeing how they fit together. Hopefully I'm wrong.

This is a good move. More competition is never a bad thing, and until Burks can show he can consistently hit an open three, he needs to earn his minutes.

Little late to the party here but reading this there was a lot of concern over Foye's size as a SG. He is a solid 6'4".
Other 6'4" SG that are playing major min. in the league right now:
Dwayne Wade
Eric Gordan
Delonte West
Monta Ellis
Tony Allen
Avery Bradley (6'2")
Jodie Meeks
Jason Terry (6'2")

Knowing that Foye is a good defender and a good outside shooter I see no problem with him getting most of his min at the 2. I think this pushes Hayward to play more at the 3 along with Williams.

Another thing that comes to mind is that Marvin came off the bench last year and I could see him doing that this year.

Not sure if this has been posted...

Addition of Foye, O'Connor said, continues effort to improve team's perimeter shooting, which was "exposed" vs. Spurs in the playoffs.

Good post for the most part. I agree that it's all too easy to simply see the best. But just looking from the perspective of what KOC is trying to do, it sure looks like he wanted to shore up perimeter D and outside shooting. He's made zero effort to acquire a playmaking point. All this points to having the offense being relatively focused around the bigs, and we've been told already that the offense will remain essentially the same. If somebody on JF is calling Mo elite color me informed.

Now, if you are a guy that is vehemently against Jefferson then these moves will look very bad as he is by far our most reliable post scorer and with these moves it looks like I'm wrong again in that AJ will not be moved. In a traditional Stockton/Sloan sense this is not Jazz basketball we are seeing built. I don't have any problem with people resisting this. But it's what is happening. Utah will be putting their chips on dominant post play rather than excellent and precise play from the PG.

Waaaawuuuuuuu. Lookey lookey. Debie downer is not a happy camper.

Jazz were after Foye since the start of free-agency, calling his agent every two days or so. I actually thought as a lot of other people did that Foye was gonna get more money than $2.5 million a year, so I guess the Jazz definitely got a deal.
