I think there are some unique variables with Ricky here that aren’t as applicable to guys like Favors:
1. Ricky was drafted really high even though he wasn’t coming over immediately. Was very hyped. His play ended up being disappointing and he was with a really ****** franchise.
2. That franchise trades him for a first round pick because they want to dump his contract.
3. He interrupts his summer in Spain to go help his new franchise try to maintain the douche that left, then participated in the cleanup after that guy leaves.
4. Ends up being on a team where his coach has irrational confidence in him, and wants him shooting every open shot.
5. Despite not really playing to his strengths, he fits in as a strong presence amongst a group of guys with great comradery, gets targeted physically in multiple games last year and his whole team comes to his defense.
6. Goes on to talk about how his next contract isn’t about money but being in the right situation where he can be happy.
7. Ends up floated in a trade where his current team is wanting to upgrade him, but does not want to include his backup in the trade. The Jazz are willing to give Memphis as long as it takes to make a decision, and show that there’s no move they care more about than swapping Ricky for this other guy.
8. The other team is not trading for him, nor is he wanted. He’s on an expiring contract which is the only thing of value he brings to the trade. It’s a trade where it’s clear to him that he’s not wanted by either party. It’s like being the kid in a custody battle where your dad doesn’t want you, but doesn’t want to have to pay child support, and your mom doesn’t want you, either, but sees some value in receiving child support, so you become an impersonal pawn in the negotiation.
So, yeah, I think Ricky’s going to take this a little personally.
