Roster Addition Wish List

I didn't know which thread to throw this in....

I honestly think what is happening is actually good for us long term. Last season, we had a feel good moment. We played lights out and it felt great. To "reward" the team and players, we brought everybody back. Most importantly, we sent a message to Mitchell that we were committed to guys he both liked and succeeded with.

Now we get to this year. We are obviously struggling. Continuity seems gone. Guys have regressed. Well, now DL can tell Mitchell we tried to recreate the magic but it just isn't happening. It would suck to lose this year, but this isn't a contending year anyway. Favors ($16.9), Rubio ($15), Thabo ($5.5) and Udoh ($3.3) are expirings. We shake their hands and wish them well.

I think this is a great opportunity to show our budding star and fanbase that status quo isn't good enough anymore. We rolled out the same team and it didn't work. Come summer, we go out and find other pieces that fit better. Pieces with long term upside. If we can't sign them, we trade for them using cap space. Regardless, we send a good message to Mitchell that we don't just sit on our hands and sometimes we move on from likeable guys for the sake of chasing a title.

Add burks (and his 11 million or so I think) to your list of expirings.

I agree, but if he misses? We keeping the powder dry again? We gonna end up with lots of dry powder waiting for the perfect addition to say yes.

Scared money don't make none. We have seen this similar patience we will make additions line of action before. I am on board with it right now... doesn't mean we couldn't have made some additional moves around the fringes. Doesn't mean we can make some short term moves now.

To be fair I thought we should have retained the pick and not done the Niko deal... in part because I didn't think they'd get a pick for him. I also think conserving space works now. I think I would have been a little more aggressive around the fringes this offseason, but we played well down the stretch so running it back wasn't stupid.

I just think he or Quin will have to make a tough call on some personnel moves... not sure Quin will bench guys if they are available. Hopefully Ricky gets good at shooting again soon.
If these players we wanted over our current players didnt want one year deals with team options then there isnt much DL could do.

I don't see how DL passing on a couple of mid tier free agents is "scared money". It's quite the opposite if he thinks he can land a big fish in 2019. That's being fearless and ballsy.

I was looking at random PG contracts and was amused to see Marcus Smart has a yearly bonus where he gets $500,000 annually if his body fat is lower than a specific agreed on percentage. A few years ago he was at 10.6% body fat at the combine (supposedly the 2nd highest % for a PG since 2000).

If you get guys on value deals you can still move them or other players. It's more ballsy to sign a guy like Bjelica on his deal an have some player turnover. We could move Bjelica or Jae or Dante to create some additional space. We can still have max space with him and those guys on the books by waiving Rubio's cap hold.

Making moves subjects you to more judgement than standing pat.

He made moves. His goal is clear. Let's judge it when it happens.

Who are we actually going to target in summer 2019? I keep seeing people say big fish or big free agent in 2019, but tell me if I'm wrong: https://hoopshype.com/2018/08/09/nba-free-agency-2019-the-top-players/

1. Durant - not happening
2. Karl Anthony Towns - not happening (restricted anyway)
3. Kawhi - not happening
4. Kyrie - not happening (stays or NY)
5. Klay - not happening (GS or LA)
6. Butler - not happening (wants other places)
7. Porzingis - not happening (restricted anyway)
8. Cousins - not happening (no thanks)
9. Kemba - maybe...
10. Myles Turner - not happening (restricted anyway)
11. Horford - not happening (he's gonna pass up on $30+?)
12. Aldridge - maybe...
13. Middleton - maybe... (does Milwaukee let him go?)
14. Randle - maybe...
15. Jordan - not happening (no thanks)
16. Rozier - maybe... (restricted)
17. Marc Gasol - not happening
18. Tobias Harris - maybe (does LA let him go?)
19. Millsap - maybe (team option)
27. Mirotic - maybe...

I put the realistic targets in bold. To me, some of those guys work really well here. To many, these aren't "big fish". Some Jazz fans would argue Favors over the big man options and Rubio over the guard options.

Will do, but in the next 10 games or so if things don't turn we need to make adjustments to lineups and playing time. If we take a step back it makes us a less attractive FA market.

We've had a tough schedule with opponents and travel. I didn't expect us to win last night or in Denver, but I didn't expect the defense to suck this much on defense and not improve on offense at all.

I disagree with how Hoops Hype has rated these players. Anyhow, I still think far and away our best and realistic option is Tobias Harris. We really need the Clippers to start losing a lot of games.
