Roster Building From Here - FA and Summer of 2023

So, listening to Locke explain his 26 wins thing, it kind of makes sense.

Basically you try and sign Clarkson on a value deal and dont sign anyone else. Bring back KO. Use all 3 draft picks.

Just play all 3 rookies significant minutes, especially the top two picks, and try to look for deals on Sexton/JC/KO (not necessarily all of them have to be dealt, but at least one).

I guess the wild-cards would be if Lauri/WK/Ochai all take big leaps and THT/Dunn are as legit as they showed for the past 20 games.

But the key is to really get the top 2 picks from this draft a lot of experience so by 24/25 season and then you have the Cavs/Wolves picks flowing in and you can really start making moves.
Assuming we resign JC, our roster as currently constructed is better than it was entering this season. Development and better fits is why.

Dunn is a downgrade from Conley but not defensively and not by much. Jones is better fit than Vando and Ochai plays by the system and defends way better than Beasley.

Kessler didnt start until January and once he took the starter role we turned into a true .500 team. Before that we had .500 record with the setup where Vando was starting but it was assisted by the hot start.

We were also a .500 team even without Sexton and JC.. until the last 11 games where we executed a proper tank.

No matter what is the team beyond Lauri/Kessler/Ochai/Dunn and the rookies I guarantee the tanking wont be available. Whoever we have from this current roster on board are going to be just better. Rookies ofc will make some mistakes but in no world this team gets under 30 wins. Locke seems not to understand how god exactly our coach is.

Now that the Raptors were eliminated in the play-in and their season is a flop, what do you guys think they will do next offseason? Keeping an eye on Trent Jr and especially OG who is apparently a great locker room guy (friendly, fun-loving and goofy), puts in effort on both ends, knows how to play without the ball effectively.

I'm guessing despite his contract year they might overprice OG again though... but he is like on top of my personal list of guys I really would love to see here.

It’s dumb to guess at how many wins we will have next year with the amount of variance our summer could have. It’s weird for Locke to talk about this. 3 firsts and 50m in cap space…

We also should be trying to convey our pick next year. Start waiting until later and you start endangering some pick swaps.

Who on the roster is worse next year? What do we add with our space? Are they rookies any good?

If memory serves, word around the campfire was they wanted 3 1st for OG. I'd be hesitant to do that on any potential 1 yr rental (PO in 24/25).

I actually worry a bit about Lauri being gassed towards the backhalf of the next season due to his commits. I know they get plenty of rest, etc, but it's still a concern to me and I hope he finds to time to relax. There's also the possibility of a bit of slump from Kess and Ochai.

I don't have much of a concern about rookies contributing. I don't know that Kessler and Ochai were thought of as "Ainge's guys" when we got them, but they got better significantly from where they started to the end of the season. That gives me a ton of hope that we have a "develop machine" in the place or at least forming. Given that and the FO and Coaching staff getting "their guys" into the fold, we might well in good shape to get the pieces for a long-term contender in place in relatively short order.

I'd be leery of adding any vets to the squad that take away significant playing time away from younger players. Cap flexibility for assets, short term rentals, etc. so we resign our dudes when the time comes.

We could do a renegotiate and extend… but I think he’s kind of overpriced. He’d be great to have but I’m not sure why anyone ponies up more than 2 picks… I wasn’t watching closely last night but he was fairly invisible

'25 Cavs, '27 LAL + some protected pick, perhaps. But I'd never pay what they want if he doesn't extend.

Would he? Im not so sure.

Between OG, Lauri and Kessler Im not sure there is enough playmaking/shot creation from our front court. Defensively got a lot of upside but could be very limited in the half court, would require a dominant scoring guard to work.
