Roster Building From Here - FA and Summer of 2023

So what the Jazz need is another all-NBA 7 footer who can play inside out and drive a little too. If they had a guy like that, it would make it very hard, theoretically, to double Kessler, or to stick their best unicorn stud post defender/small ball specialist on him to nullify him.

Unfortunately, guys like that are near impossible to find and just aren't made available, so I am not sure where we get one. But if we DID have someone like that, theoretically, good luck "small-balling" the Jazz after they add a few more shooters with length.
The thing that will determine if Kessler can play against 5 out will be his ability to defend on the perimeter. Having other players that can defend the perimeter and secondary rim protectors/rebounders will help as well.

Eh, I dont think naz reid is all nba. Hell, he isn't even a starter. Jaren jackson jr wasn't all nba either. Dont think he was even an allstar. Also I dont think your center has to be 7 feet tall. Also never said anything about being able to drive with the ball. I do think it helps to not be able to hack a shaq your centers so you want him to be a decent free throw shooter.

Not looking for a unicorn or a superstar. I just think in todays nba its nice if your center can shoot it a little (not great or anything. just respectable) and pass a little (again not jokic level or anything), and defend the perimeter a bit. Nothing super crazy about that imo. We like to throw out the term unicorn alot but the fact is that bigs that can play on the outside on both ends are becoming less and less rare. Not really unicorns anymore.

I think Kessler is awesome. I do worry that certain teams will be able to exploit his weaknesses and make it hard for him to stay on the court in the playoffs. I hope im wrong though. I didn't enjoy the clippers series when they went small. Or the warriors series when they went small.

For those who have PTSD over our past team's inability to defend 5 out, I think this Jazz team is already in much better position because of Lauri. Having a secondary rim protector/rebounder is a huge deal and is critical when a team is able to take away your main rim protector from the paint. Now we just need to hope that Kessler can learn to defend the perimeter as well as Gobert learned to.

I also think we are in better position because our team rotates 1 million times better than our last team and Hardy is way more willing to experiment with defensive schemes. Lastly, but maybe most importantly, hopefully we will end up with guards who are more capable of staying in front of their guy or navigating simple screens.

Good point

We can bring back Westbrook this coming season, he'd be really cheap since he went 3-18 in his last clippers game ever with a botched layup and a costly turnover to end the series

Is it? I'm not sure 0.6 blocks per game supports the notion that Lauri is a good rim protector.
there were some rim protection numbers out earlier in the year that showed opponents shot really poorly when he was in the area. It passes the eye test to me. So there is some data to it even if he has low block rates... it might be a little fluky but I think you could run him as a 5 or with another guy that can masquerade as a 5. One of the appeals for me in getting Taylor Hendricks would be to run 5 out and protect the rim with Lauri and Taylor for 10 minutes or so a night or more if matchup dictated it.
