Rudy Gobert "Greatest Jazz Center of All Time" Countdown Thread

It's pretty much Gobert and Eaton at this point. Much love for Memo, but Gobert has passed him. Here's Eaton's accomplishments:

• NBA All-Star (1989)
• 2× NBA Defensive Player of the Year (1985, 1989)
• 3× NBA All-Defensive First Team (1985, 1986, 1989)
• 2× NBA All-Defensive Second Team (1987, 1988)
• 4× NBA blocks leader (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988)
• Most Blocks in a Season (456)
• Highest Career Average Blocked Shots Per Game (3.5)

On a side note, how in the hell is Eaton not in the HoF?

It's easy enough to see Gobert long since passed Eaton offensively. As far as Gobert, here's where we're at:

• All-NBA Second Team (2017)
• All-NBA Third Team (2019)
• 2× NBA Defensive Player of the Year (2018, 2019)
• 3× NBA All-Defensive First Team (2017–2019)
• NBA blocks leader (2017)

It's very close. If Rudy gets another DPOY, gains an AS berth and/or All-NBA again, does this put him even or possibly over Big Mark?

In my eyes he’s past Eaton. No disrespect to Eaton, but Eaton would not be nearly what he is had he played in today’s nba. Had Gobert played in the 80’s and 90’s, he would’ve averaged 5-6 blocks in the era of the center and playing inside the three point line living in the post. It’s really not close IMO.

We don't know how Eaton or Gobert would have sculpted their body differently in different eras, so it's silly to make comparisons.

However, if today's fairly thin Gobert was transported back to the late 80s, he gets pushed around a lot by the bulkier centers back then, especially once they stop calling charges when someone bangs through you in the post.

If you think about it like a draft, which player would you pick out of the available field, it isn't close. If all Jazz centers were available in their prime to play basketball in any era, only a fool would take anyone other than Gobert with the first draft choice.

If you're measuring it in terms of career accomplishments then I think Gobert still has work to do to catch Eaton. It might take more than one more season to have a better resume.

Which is why accomplishments aren’t a true measure of a players success.

Ironically, I think that Favors is still ahead of him due to a several year head start. Now that Favors is not an active Jazzman, Gobert should catch him pretty quickly.

But then our offense would have to change because we don't play through Rudy Gobert like like Nuggets play through Jokic. But Rudy gobert did say at the end of last season that he has mentally limited himself on what he can be for our franchise. Im sure we'll see something new this year.
