Rumor: Jazz prepared to match 'any offer' for Hayward.

Does any here honestly think the Jazz will attract a big name FA in the next 2 years? Really? We're going to suck clown *******, no one will want to play here until we're near contention and we're not even close.
We will have assets though. Another way to get big name players is through trade. (harden)

Gonna be fun watching all of the hate gordon gets from jazz fanz or cavs fans if he gets a max deal and doesnt come close to living up to it

If?

Does anyone other than the dumbest owner in sports, think that Gordon is worth the max?

The "if" is in regards to "if" he gets a max contract

Each team must meet a minimum payroll:

Season Minimum Payroll Amount

2011-12 80% of the cap $46.435 million
2012-13 85% of the cap $49.337 million
2013-14 90% of the cap $52.811 million

If a team doesn't meet its minimum payroll it is surcharged at the end of the season for the shortfall. That money is distributed among the players on that team.

So...the penalty is just paying up to that amount. Why would the Jazz overpay players on longterm contracts that could hurt future flexibility to hit a threshold that doesn't come with any additional penalty? The minimum salary threshold shouldn't play into any contract decision.

You do realize that the cap is going up each year right? We still will have around $26M next year to spend.
The Jazz currently have about $30mm in cap space without Gordo (depending on unguaranteed players). If Gordo makes $15mm in 15/16, and the salary cap goes up by the forecasted additional $3mm next season, the Jazz would have $18mm (more likely less) of space before signing draft picks, Alec Burks and Enes Kanter.

So...the Jazz will likely be done with major free agent signings if they match a big offer for Gordo.

We gotta do something to make the next step and I agree w/Avery's post. Gotta take a chance.

Yes no **** the cap goes up every year. I am well aware of that. That doesn't change any of the logic that I laid out in my post. You can rationalize it any which way you want, but overpaying players is never a good idea for a small market team. Period. We're not the Yankees.

I don't think we are going to miss out on any big free agents by re-signing Hayward. I can't see many players flocking to Utah. I also don't see it causing us to be unable to re-sign Enes. Besides $ coming out of the Miller's pocket, I don't see a whole lot of downsize to keeping him.

If I have a choice of the Jazz having a roster with or without Gordon, I keep Gordon every time.

Best case scenario is the Jazz working a sign-and-trade. Gordo isn't worth more than $9mm on a team with top talent. No way in hell I'd match a max contract.

You're not overpaying if that is what the market dictates...

OMG...

It's the summer of 2004 all over again...

I remember reading the exact same nonsense when Pau was signed to the max...
