Sure, but does Jody work for the Enquirer or a publication that seeks to report the news honestly and accurately? I didn't think he was a gossip columnist. May be he should have added a qualifier, like an unreliable source, or unsubstantiated source. And anyone who follows the Jazz would know this is utter b.s., and Jody is one of those, yet he reports it and because he's a reporter people believe it. Is that good, honest journalism? Sure he can report it, but like I said I don't think it was a good call on his part.

The problem is no outsider knows if this was BS or not. That is an assumption. If you take him at his word he heard a potential situation from a source he trust. Clearly said source was OK with him talking about it via twitter. Trades are contingent on some many things and the vast majority don't ever materialize.

It is not the job of media to spare feelings. SLTrib is not a Jazz run medium. Favors played in the freakin' New York market, where players of his type are under trade rumor scrutiny 5 times a week.

Very goods points. That being said, while the Trib is not here to pander to the Jazz and their emotions, there are still ethics that are supposed to be followed. While DJ doesn't owe anything to Favors personally, imagine if somebody from the DNews tweeted out that he has an inside source at the Trib, and he's heard that they feel like they can/might replace DJ with somebody from another paper who fits their direction better. While the DNews reporter wouldn't technically be doing anything wrong it doesn't mean that it was ethical or done in good taste.

DJ also has to be careful not to alienate the Jazz. How many of these "rumors" can a beat writer throw against the wall before the Jazz organization gets pissed and starts to close off DJ's access to players and information in an effort to protect their employees? How eager is Favors going to be to give DJ an open and honest interview? Imo, mutual trust with the Jazz is the lifeblood of Jody's job as a beat writer. Without it, he really can't give us anymore info that we can find ourselves.

Would reporting that the Jazz would take Trey Lyles before it happen be unethical becuase it might hurt Trevor Booker's feelings?

I hope you're not advocating that beat reporters be nothing but Ahmad Rashads. If Jazz cut off access to a major media outlet because of its beat reporter reporting on his/her sources, they'd be CRUCIFIED. There have been several incidents particular with major college football teams and the school newspaper where the teams have been raked across the coals because of limiting access due to said media not conforming with the information that football coach wants to release. Earlier this year, the Cincinnati Reds' coach went on an insane and inane rant about the media reporting. He's essentially a laughingstock now.

It makes a ton of sense. The team that receives the call is always in the better position than the team making the call. Leaks out that the Jazz could trade Favors, teams may call them instead of the Jazz calling teams about Burke. Jazz could then lead into talks about Burke instead of Favors.

People like you defending bad reporting are the reason US media has become laughing stock to the world.
