Saint Cy's Incredible Knowledge and Wisdom: Jazz Must Acquire Kyle Filipowski in the 2024 Draft

I can't even find the 2020 draft thread but if someone said I cooked I won't disagree

My expectation is that real NBA players will look out of place, in a good way, by their second year in the Summer League, but is there any data to back that up?

I did a semi deep dive on rookie performance in summer league compared to rookie performance in their first year which basically showed that there is a slight correlation, but lots of examples of it not meaning much.

I'll see what I can figure out on second year players.

OK, went back 3 years and looked at as many Sophomore performances as I could and compared vs their Sophomore year in the NBA. There are lots of examples of Sophomores playing well in Summer League and not doing very much their Sophomore year in the NBA. I couldn't find very many examples of Sophomores who played poorly in summer league having a good Sophomore season in the NBA, but I would also caution that many of the top players don't play summer league, so there isn't a lot of data there.

I would still probably conclude that Summer League doesn't mean very much, even for Sophomores, but if anything to not get excited about a good summer league from a Sophomore and to be extremely skeptical of a Sophomore who plays poorly.

Overall I think the context is just too random and sample size too small for a stats based analysis

Filipowski's fall was one of the biggest misses in the 2024 draft. I wonder how much of his fall was due to off-court concerns/issues related to his presumedly sketchy girlfriend that bounced round social media pre-draft. (For the record, I couldn't care less. It was a non-story amplified by the social-media cesspool.)

Regardless, I think the Jazz should start planting the seeds (anonymously of course) that AJ’s and Boozer’s family, girlfriend, agents, etc. are totally bat-crap crazy and you don’t want that heat.

I don't honestly know how much that really factored in. I think he was always kind of a mid to late first round guy so a small slip for a potential tweener who hadn't shot it at a high clip yet... is not unheard of.

If it is one of the reasons those teams are so incredibly dumb.
