I hate how big of a deal this is in basketball, but I think it is very important. Especially for a team like this.
I'm, trying to do the math on this.
Favors is getting about $12 million, and Burke and Gobert are on rookie contracts until 2017-18.
Those are the only guys we have locked up long term. Kanter is likely due for a nice extension this offseason, along with Burks?
So obviously we are very nicely situated in salary cap space. I'm starting to think that we should match pretty much any offer for Hayward. Because he will not really affect our ability to sign our future draft picks. In fact his contract would be up as soon as it is time to offer 2014 draft picks extensions. He is also a nice trade asset, and we have amnesty. So I don't think a Hayward contract would really handcuff us very badly. But I still wouldnt give him max.
Now the 2014 salary cap is around $60 million looking here: https://www.hoopsworld.com/utah-jazz-team-salary I'd say we are at about $30 million next year. We have to spend a certain amount of the cap (85%?). So unless there is a free agent everyone wants to push hard for, i'd say we might as well resign our own guys.
Hayward 4 years $50 million
Kanter 4 years $55 million
Burks 4 years $28 million?
Rush 3 years $15 million?
Now we are set until 2017-18
Burke/Neto
Hayward/Burks/Rush
Wiggins/Parker /Hayward
Kanter/Favors
Favors/Gobert
Maybe a couple more free agents/Golden State draft pick. I think that is our window. Hayward, Favors, Burke, Gobert, and 2014 draft picks will be up for contracts after this.
What would you guys do?
