What's new

Should the Jazz go for an upgrade at PG?

Name thee superstar point guards who have won championships in the last ten years. I can't. Not only is Stockton not on the team anymore, neither is Sloan. This is a new team, and with Burks, Hayward, and CJ we have a chance to have a distributing point forward, or creating 2 guard. This is what has won championships in the last decade. Kobe, Dwane, Manu, (DeShawn? just kidding, way to go Kidd)

Having Harris makes me nervous, but I am willing to look forward. He's a good 'basketball player' not really a distributor, but some of our non point wing are promising passers. BTW, I do like the idea of using the golden state pick on a point guard. Our current point guards are definitely not the rebuilding side of the team.

I was hopefull that we would get to see if Burks could play the PG spot, at least a little. But with Harris, Watson and Tinsley it seems that the team did not feel that was his spot.

I think our PG position is upgraded by not having Ronnie Price on the team. Watching Tinsley in the last game, it's like night and day compared to Ronnie Price.

Just speaking to Kendall, consider this (and I am an NCAA guy) ..

Kendall has neither of a) a quick first step (pretty slow, actually), and b) an outside shot.

Kendall is an elite passer, but how will he do in the NBA if he can't get around an NBA defender if he gets crowded .. if the defender sags, he can't hit the shot .. defense if the same story. I like Kendall, but an unathletic, non-shooter is a bit worrisome, but that's just me.
Andre Miller isn't a shooter or that athletic, also Mark Jackson comes to mind. Jackson is the #2 assist man in the game, he wasn't athletic or a shooter ether. To me he is a pure pg in every aspect. We don't need a star pg like others have said, just one that gets everyone involved, and that's Kendall Marshall. I could care less if he can run or shoot. As long as he is good at making others around him better. Remember all of the draft experts underrated D-Will's athletic ability foot speed and shooting

When the Jazz had the best point guard in the NBA people said point guards don't win championships. I believe them. The Jazz have got to be the team with the biggest night in and night out edge at point guard over the last 25 years, no championships.

I'm happy with Harris.

Agreed.
I don't think there's really much of an upgrade to be had for the Jazz anyway.
Harris is pretty solid, and I think he can switch up his game to more of a pass first attitude.
Big men win championships, and everyone knows it.
The only reason the Jazz don't have two championships already is because they never had legit big men guarding the paint in those years.

Hinrich. With a bow. Merry Xmas jazzfanz.

If the Hawks won't let us absorb his contract (they have a young, promising PG), then maybe we can swap Harris for him and pick up Mo Williams with the TPE. Just a thought... perhaps we could do better with the TPE than Mo...

I think the Jazz will find a decent player in the draft to play PG somewhere in the first round. We don't need a world-beater, just a hard-nosed defender, good athlete who can finish and hit an open look. Several players like Holliday, Lawson, Tony Parker, etc. have been taken in the middle of the first round where the Jazz should have a pick. Even Darius Morris, a 2nd-round pick, looks okay for the Lakers in pre-season--at least better than Fisher and Blake (which says little, I know).

With a draft as thin on PGs as this one, I'm sure that a few will emerge and enter the draft. Scott Machado could come out.

Also, what do you think of Shabazz Napier at UConn? -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iL_CHnSKsdc

I've always liked Hinrich since he entered the league, but for some reason he never ended up with the Jazz.
I still don't know if he's much of an upgrade passing wise anyway.
I don't believe all of the majority of the assists should come from the point on the Jazz.
I think everyone should be passing for assists, and that's why I was such a big advocate for AK.
At a much cheaper price than he was previously getting of course.

I don't think you are gonna upgrade on Harris. Harris is solid. The two guys you listed above have nothing on Harris.

This is solid? Last season 5.4 assist per game vs. 2.9 turnovers per game (only a positive of 2.5). Field goal shooting percentage .413. Sorry I do not consider this solid at all.

We we're sorry you don't consider that solid. Going from a team like New Jersey, to a team like the Jazz last year.... and you consider that he was supposed to be better?
New Jersey had absolutely no talent, and the Jazz's offense last year consisted of Big Al in the post and Millsap in iso plays.

Yeah he has been tearing it up for the Jazz both last season and so far this season. Look for him to be traded if the right deal comes along. He is a think first shooting point guard not a help his teammates type of guard. Heck most people consider him a combo guard and not a pure point guard at all. A difference of opinion is what makes horse racing, and your welcome to yours.
