What's new

Should the Jazz shut Favors down for a while?

He's done for the season dude.

Link?

Just feels real ****ing lame that we are salary cap fearmongering while the Jazz got the best record in the NBA and are in the best position to win a ring that the franchise has ever been in.

We've just won 5 out of our last 10 going 5-5 or if you want to make it look worse - we lost 75% of our last 4 games going 1-3.

I think the mood is appropriate - the Jazz need to start playing their BEST basketball because everyone playing against them is.

New Orleans - beat us - in their best game of their season.
Miami - same.
GSW - same.
Sixers - same.
Clippers - same.

Teams are AMPED to the play against the Utah Jazz - if our guys don't bring their A game - well, we've seen what happens.

Has anyone mentioned he just got a week off? How much rest does he need?
Yeah I thought of that today. Highly concerning. I think I saw him jump twice in the game today. And his lateral movement was terrible. Maybe he needs a month off, who knows.

I got no issue with people complaining about

Jazz are fine.

Favors hasn't been great recently but he definitely doesn't deserve to be a scapegoat. We have been succesful because we had 6-7 guys playing at the high level for a long stretch. Bogie or Donovan had bad games but there were always someone else stepping up. We are collectively worse now. We are looking like in those losses to Knicks or Brooklyn just before we went on that long winning streak.

He probably won't be ready though. Those G-League minutes would have been crucial.
Won’t be ready? Tooooooo block shots, set screens, and dunk? Like, the same stuff he did in high school and college? We’re not exactly asking him to run the offense.

I think Favs is the symptom of a bigger problem... we just don't have a lot of plus defenders on the perimeter. They don't force a lot of turnovers or get a lot of steals.

The system puts too much pressure on the rim protectors imo... in the playoffs when teams plan to pull Rudy out the paint it becomes a bigger problem.

We should have figured out ways to still be functional on defense without the best rim protector in the league. We should have a couple different styles we can play... we are setting ourselves up to maximize wins in the post season but may end up falling short in the playoffs. Good healthy teams have been able to solve us the last few weeks.

It's hardly anything new. Andy Larsen sent about 10 tweets after the Doke pick explaining why fixing perimeter D was more important than doubling down on rim protection

Yes this is something many of us have been clamoring for since the playoffs last year. It seems weird the team doesn't see this. How can they not? I really hope this means they have a plan to account for this. But the D overall needs to be fixed. It's a real problem the last 6 games or so. Especially with Gobert on the bench.

Agreed. And I was there with all of you scratching my head. The funny thing is Locke and others have made it sound like it is impossible to play multiple different defensive styles. Last night Warriors switched which threw us off and then they went with some zone... some of it worked and led to some turnovers.

I didn't get too down on the Favs signing because he's one of the few that's had success doing what we do... he also struggled with it at times. I didn't see the need to go as far as they did on the money side because shaving some money off that deal would allow you to duck the tax this year which saves us some serious headaches later. I also thought there were a few guys that could be had for cheap that could protect the rim such as Alex Len (minimum deal), Nerlens Noel (around $5M) are a couple examples.

To me it comes down to the final goal of the team... if you want to maximize regular season success getting bench guys that do a reasonable copy of what the starters do makes sense. Winning a championship requires roster and system flexibility... its why elite two way wings are so valuable. They provide maximum flexibility. We likely weren't getting one of those types with the MLE or whoever we drafted so it probably doesn't matter. It just feels too safe and too comfortable to use the assets the way we did.

We are falling into some of our old habits... but hopefully its just a small lapse in the middle of a season and we figure things out. Hopefully its not that we were playing a little over our heads and had some schedule luck (we caught a lot of teams without key guys).
