Simmons: Kanter one of the worst defensive players of all time

Kanter getting on national tv more might have been the worst thing possible for his market value this summer. It seems like there's been an explosion of national interest in his defensive failings that simply wasn't there the last couple years.

Sorry, I just don't see it. Simmons said it in the linked podcast, front offices are dumb. They don't care about, or at least are willing to look past, poor defense. Kanter is going to get the max thrown at him.

And here's how it's going to go down. At least one NBA front office out there is going to be super smart and dig deep into their "advanced analytics". What they'll find is that Kanter had a 17.5 PER this year with Utah, and a 24.3 PER with OKC.

And as we all know from Exum's super smart, analytics-driven critics on JazzFanz, looking at a young player's PER can tell you pretty much everything you need to know about their future value.

Just look at the advanced analytics damn it. Kanter is a superstar according to them. Maybe he really is a generational talent. Let's sign him for the max and pray OKC doesn't match.

PER is not synonymous with analytics. Defensive rating and other metrics that show Kanter's flaws are also analytics. I've literally never heard anyone imply that the concern with Exum is his low PER.

PER(and WS) are pretty much the only advanced stat that evaluate Kanter above average because they overvalue rebounding and efficient scoring(something he's been doing well since joining OKC) and don't put enough emphasis on defense(or doesn't punish for inadequate defense). According to pretty much every single other stat he's one of the worst 10 centers in the league.

BPM(44/50), RPM(64/74), WAR(68/74), VORP(44/50)... In general, advanced stats that rely on individual numbers like Kanter, because... well... because he puts up numbers. Advanced stats that look at his effect on his team put him among the worst in the league.

I blame the Jazz for not giving him his well deserved minutes that he needed to give a damn on the court.

Looks like Mr. Simmons took a page out of the Bill Walton book of basketball hyperbole.

Please Kantor wasn't even the worst defending pf the Jazz have ever given minutes to. Had he not seen Carlos Boozer?
Boozer understood enough to be where he was supposed to be. He just didn't care enough to make an effort for the play. Enes is not smart enough to understand where he's supposed to be and doesn't care enough to even try and learn it. You never saw plays where Boozer ran away from the defensive spot, You see it all the time with Kanter.
