Small trade idea

A small idea that I find intriguing. Not certain I'd do it yet and might not agree to it until draft day when I've seen who's around at the #9 slot, but I believe given the trading partner that it could be agreed to on the spot next week.

Utah trades #9 to Memphis.

Memphis trades #12 and #25 to Utah.

Why for Memphis: Utah can credibly claim to be interested in Luke Babbitt. Memphis wants Luke Babbitt (per Chad Ford's piece today as well as draftexpress). Memphis has three picks in the first round. Even after the trade they still have #9 and #28 so the cost of doing business isn't too high for them and they get the guy they want.

Why for Utah: Depending on whom you believe between Chad Ford, Draftexpress, or nbadraft.net, it appears that either Cole Aldrich or Xavier Henry will fall to #12. Both players (pending the outcome of the present Big Board vote) appear to be favored over Babbitt at least on this board. If the front office feels the same way they can collect an additional first rounder and still come up with a better outcome than Babbitt.

The #25 pick could have a number of prospects the Jazz have already worked out, such as Larry Sanders and Damion James. Or we could probably get Archie's favorite Dwayne Wade type scorer Willie Warren. :p

While I know we generally poo-poo trade threads I think this one is a lot more realistic than most. Feel free to let me know if I'm crazy for thinking so.

I hate the idea of moving down in any darft. I like quality over quantity, you can have a chance of someone slipping to you at 9, but at 12? Not a chance.

If you think you can get aldrich at 12 i don't see why not. The Jazz need bodies for next year and rookies come pretty cheap.

I hate the idea of getting a undersized center... Why can't we get someone 7' tall and roll a craps shoot? I'm all for Whiteside, it's either Whiteside or get Joel Pryzbilla. The Jazz have a chance at getting a Pryzbilla type of player through free agency, if Whiteside becomes Marcus Camby 2.0, then the Jazz could only get a player like that through trade, if at all.

The Jazz should do this on draft night and have a trade pre-arranged if they can't trade up for Wall, Turner, Favors, Johnson, or Cousins and after they've already drafted Babbitt (selecting him for the Grizzlies, essentially). Hopefully, this would mean the Jazz would be able to pick #12 instead of letting the Grizzlies do it.

In the three present mock-drafts that I think most people check this is how it plays out with the three guys mentioned.

Chad Ford: Luke Babbitt at #9 (Utah's pick). Cole Aldrich at #11. Xavier Henry at #15.

Draftexpress: Xavier Henry at #8. Luke Babbitt at #12 (Memphis' pick). Cole Aldrich at #14.

Nbadraft.net: Luke Babbit at #8. Cole Aldrich at #9. Xavier Henry at #15.

In all three mocks, one of the two slides past the #12 pick that we would use.

If you would have presented me those three players a few years ago when talking about the New York pick, I would have opened a few veins in a warm tub of water.

I agree. As soon as the #6 pick rolls around the Jazz should be on the phone with Memphis and monitoring the situation closely.

Life is what it is. Like it or not, we didn't win the lottery and you have to play the hand you're dealt.

If I am JOC, I have little interest in acquiring #25. Now, if it is #9 for #12 and loosened restrictions on the future (Brewer) pick, that might interest me.

I'd do it. Not only would I do it, but it's a no-brainer, IMO. There is no downside.

I feel like you have just as good a chance at getting a player at 12 as you do at 9. Hell, we Jazz fans can't even agree on Udoh, Aminu, Babbitt, Henry, Whiteside, Aldrich, Hayward, Davis, Patterson, George, etc - some of those guys will be there at 9 and some will be there at 12. Who among those guys is better? Who the hell knows? It truly is a crapshoot.

Plus, I think this is a great draft to have a late first round pick. You could go combo guard with a guy like Armon Johnson, Terrico White or Avery Bradley...or most likely you go after one of the big men who will be available there - Seraphin, Brackins, Alabi, Sanders, Orton, Varnado, Booker, Jordan, or N'Diaye. Hell, DX has Whiteside at 18 and Ford has him at 22 - perhaps teams are scared off by his attitude concerns, etc - and he slips to 25. The guy is a huge risk, but at 25, it's one you take.
