Snow storms

Ok that made me feel funny.

Anyway, it was 58 degrees in Reno today. Expecting it to warm up more by the end of the week. Not a cloud in the sky. Woot!

This is as cold as it's been in Denver in 15 years or so. It's like -10 out there, and probably more like -25 with the windchill.

I live in the NE and this winter's been crazy...over 60 inches of snow already and another storm expected Saturday, and possibly one Tuesday too. 100 inches could fall.

Go outside and sit on that porch of yours for a while. If the low temp that been forecast for tonight turns out to be wrong by one degree, and it actually stops at 1 F instead of 0, I'll claim it's all your credit, and give you some rep for the claim and the public service.

Its 53 right now. Damn cold.

I was supposed to be heading for LA, but I'm not driving over the mountains in this cold. I'd think 53 was about forty degrees better, maybe 45. Usually its ten degrees warmer this time of year in LA at this time of night. You've got high wind warnings for some areas, and freeze warnings in some foothill locations. The ocean runs around 50-55 degrees there and if you're close to it, you just don't get much colder.

I went out today and I swear it must've been near 0 with about 30 MPH winds. I'm very tolerant to cold and came back inside feeling like ice cubes were recently pressed against my exposed skin. It was brutal.

Where da ya live babe?

My wife claims "home" is where she is, in SLC most of the time. I have a ranch out in the desert near Ely, NV, and my mom lived in St. George where I was raised, and my dad lived and worked in Henderson, NV. I make the rounds. My brother the electrochemist/cold fusion guy lives in Ridgecrest where he did research for the Navy and teaches sometimes at La Verne.

Craziest snow storm I've been through in my life here (and apparently the worst is yet to come!)... It's the most massive amount of snow fall i've ever seen at once, combined with hurricane like winds and some lightning and thunder. I've never seen anything quite like it. Doesn't help that my house is on the F-ing lake!!!

An acquaintance of mine bought a house in Bloomington, along the Virgin River in southern Utah without asking my opinion. . . . . when I went there I just had to ask if he knew he was on a flood plain. . . . .I'm so tactless about such things. . . .

And now, here I am, about to abuse a simple soul crying out for understanding in a freakin' blizzard of the century, about to ask. . . . do you know there's been glaciers covering "Chicago" for about 9/10 of the past three million years????

Any chance we could drop a pipe into Lake Michegan and pump some water to Vegas????? in the warm years maybe????? If you could swing the deal I'd put in a good word for you to Oscar Goodman. It would be a wonderful turnabout in the way things work, you know. The Chicago mob dropped a pipe in some casinos in Vegas and have been pumping cash out back to Chicago for eighty years.

Where was I crying out for understanding? I was merely stating. A telling projection on your part, however. We're all here for you.

Yeah, I'm in Chicago nowadays... I just got the following e-mail to all UChicago students:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To: All students
From: Marlon Lynch, Associate Vice President for Safety and Security and Chief of Police
Subject: Weather emergency – Shelter in place
Date: February 1, 2011

Weather conditions have deteriorated significantly in the last few hours, and it is no longer safe to travel outdoors. Due to several accidents, campus shuttle bus service was suspended at 9 p.m. High winds, blinding snow and cold make walking dangerous.

If you are in your residence for the evening, we ask you to stay there and not to venture outside. If you are in a building on campus, we also ask you to take shelter where you are. We know of some larger groups of people in campus buildings, and are working to support them. If you are stranded and you do not have support where you are, or are concerned for your safety, please call University police at 123 from any campus phone, or at 773-702-8181.

This is a serious situation, and we ask you to heed warnings. Do not put yourself in a situation that is unsafe.

So yeah, fun times. Luckily I only had one class today from 9:00am-Noon, and it didn't start really coming down until 3:00pm or so. I made a last run to the store and now I'm ready to hunker down for the next few days. Luckily I work from home.

i don't mind cold by itself, but cold + constant wind gusts in your face = frickin freezin mr. bigglesworth. my nose was frozen
