Somewhere Harpring is Sad

I just realised that why would Harpring care if these guys are better or worse than him? He is retired and from what I can see loyal to the Jazz franchise. That might be only because of his job but still. If anything he would be happy the Jazz have some good - great players.

The point of the thread is not that you guys are overrating Harpings career, even though you are, and everything I said is true.
The point is that having a reputation and philosophy of being a team that likes to foul a lot and play nasty and dirty is detrimental to the long term success of the team.
The point is that they have a skilled group of young players that could be the core of a very good team , IF they learn how to play defense without fouling or playing dirty, and IF they get a reputation of being a team that shouldn't get called for more fouls than the other teams.
If they do not do this, they have zero chance of winning a title in Utah.

Yes you are right we should've stayed with Booz Memo and Williams. (sarcasm) no one was afraid of taking it to the rim on any of these guys. Where did that core get us. How many calls did they get, and don't tell me they had a reputation for dirty play because I will laugh you right off Jazzfanz!

What a ridiculous thread. Harpring was playing at an All-Star level the year after Stock and Malone left, but went down with a serious injury. After that he was never quite the same as he continued getting injured and the problem with his knees worsened. Before he came to the Jazz, he had always been a solid and much better than average player. Neither Burks or Hayward are yet as good as Matt was in his prime, not even close.

Burks, Hayward, Kanter, and Favors have more skills than Harping did. Harping was a two trick pony. He had a good midrange jump shot, and he was an aggressive bull of a small forward that pushed people around ,fouled hard and would intimidate people, aka play a little bit dirty. That's it. He did not create his own shot, he did not have outstanding leaping ability, he was not a shot blocker, he didn't have the offense run through him, he wasn't fast, he couldn't guard a ball handler, he couldn't guard the rim, he couldn't fake people or create space on his drives, he was not an outstanding rebounder, he wasn't great in transition, he did not fill passing lanes, etc.

That is not the point of this thread. Harp had a solid career, being a starter on some playoff teams, which is more than respectable. He was never a star. That's fine, the jazz are all about hardworking team players that give effort , which many of us identify with and appreciate, and he was all that. I am just saying that all four of the Jazz young players bring skills to the table that give them the potential to be stars, and this should not be jeopardized by having a team that thinks that playing defense means fouling a lot or playing dirty. I don't think that this philosophy is conducive to the players improving their game or getting respect in the league.

Your whole premise is that teams with dirty reps have no shot at winning a championship, and don't get calls. My response to that was the above, that D-Will Booz and Memo won no championships and always got screwed by the refs.

This is the new age culture. However the Spurs did have a couple dirty players like Ginobili and the king of dirty Bruce Bowen.

Name a team in the last 50 years that let teams drive the paint and did nothing to foul or give resistance to other teams, and still won championships. Their weren't many teams that had more success then the Jazz in the 90's please pleaseeeeeeeeee give me a challenge!
