Spanking

Were you spanked as a child?

Well, my opinion is that if you have to resort to spanking then one should take a parenting class. I see no good reason for spanking. Most of the time it is an issue with a parent not being control their frustration or temper. For some it is easier to smack their kid then take a deep breathe and muster up some patience.

Funny how the spanking stopped in my family as I got bigger than my father. All it did was piss me off it didn't change my behavior. I would never hit my kids they respect me enough to do what they are told. Besides they hate it so much when I take away their cell phones or shut down their computers that there is really no need to spank. LOL.

I think most of us are talking about spanking smaller children. It has its place. Now for older children (see your cell phone and computer comment) I agree that there is no need for spanking. Loss of privilages works alot better.

I was, and I did.

I hate to say it because it sounds so horrible, but one of our responsibilities is to teach children fear of consequences. There are too many children these days (I sound like an old whipper-snapper...wait, I am one) who are shellshocked when they hit real life because they never experienced fear or diversity as a child. Their parents smoothed over the consequences of detrimental actions, or just chastised them. If the kid knows he's not going to lose anything or get hurt or feel true, real fear, he will not learn to take his actions more seriously, and to be more fully aware.

With how well off we are as a society today, our children oftentimes never have a need go unfulfilled, and oftentimes also never have a want go unfulfilled. Then they don't understand why the world won't cater to them as a young adult. By the time they recover, they're already 5 or 6 figures in debt, in a dead end job, and can't figure out why they should spend money on education instead of their next set of tattoos or their car payment for their tricked-out ride or buying more clothes.

Ya, I ranted. That. Just. Happened.

EDIT: added a bunch of crap.

I was. Like most forms of management, it's all about context. I think it should be done as a last resort, and the older the child is, the more confusing and ineffective it is (my dad tried to spank me when I was 15 and I was confused and wanted to fart on his hand).

I have a couple kids it's effective with and a couple it isn't. Spanking shouldn't be as much about punishment as one of many methods of correction. I spank rarely. If my kids deserved it more I'd spank them more. When I do, though, I always talk to them before (about why I am doing it) and then after (about what different behavior I want to see). I NEVER spank out of anger. My wife did early in our marriage and I told her I would handle the discipline.. and she obliged.

I wasn't. Thank Jebus for super duper hippie parents. Though my mom could scream with the best of them.

If I have kids I don't think I will. It seems rather violent to me.

I was spanked and so was my wife. We decided not to punish our daughter by spanking. She was more against it than I was. Probably the right decision given my daughter's personality, but I don't judge anyone who decides on spanking, as long as it doesn't become excessive or hands give way to paddles or belts.
