Generally not healthy to go too low, but many athletes do it with no ill effect observed.
There's just no way in hell Malone ever played or trained at 2.6% body fat. I can kind of believe just below 5%, but not sub 3%. That's like what body builders get to right before a competition and it's very taxing to their health.
