Speculations for how the Coronavirus fallout will impact the Jazz as a franchise

This thread can include things as diverse as speculations about breaking up the Gobert-Mitchell core to salary-cap issues going forward (if the stoppage of play has serious knock-on effects going forward).

It’ll be too early for most of these speculations to be on solid footing—but it’s sort of the off-season, and that’s the sort of stuff that happens on this site during the off-season.

Gobert will be awarded permanent Defensive Player of the Year status for stuffing the entire league all at once. No player will ever accomplish that again.

I don't have much speculation to add, but if the rumors of tension between Rudy and Donovan are true I hope the gravity of this outbreak helps them to reconcile whatever differences they have.

Salary cap goes down for next season. Not a ton, but it won't stay same or increase.

Preseason gets all but wiped out much like the NFL is attempting to do.

Gobert gets traded this summer. We don't get all that we wish we would, but we will hide behind the post Gordon Hayward logic of "better to get something rather than lose him for nothing."

NCAA players granted an additional year of eligibility should they stay enrolled.

Gobert and Mitchell will both fully recover and test virus free in a week or two thus helping to calm fears by showcasing that the vast majority who test positive will recover and quickly return to health. They will then be great public service representatives doing numerous promotions together to educate the public on precautions that need to be taken to help protect the more vulnerable amongst us whose recovery will be more difficult and not nearly so certain. In the process they will become even better friends and teammates and be seen and appreciated nationwide as having helped the nation though a difficult time.

There will be no playoffs so Conley experiment will go on, we will bring basically the same team next season.
This is my bet too. I think they will find a way to hold the playoffs but they will run back essentially the same team next year. I just hope they figure out a way to hold onto Clarkson.

After the announcement of the fact that the owners don't have to pay the players if the season is shut down I think Gail actually put this all in motion... she ain't paying Mike all dat monies.

I think the cap declines a meaningful amount. Only way it doesn't happen is if they do some smoothing based on future potential increases. If China cut 1-2M from the cap I can see this going to like 5-10M reduction depending on how many games we get.

Best case is a month is missed and they do some super short regular season (like max 6 games) then go into the playoffs.

Then who knows. I tend to think lockerroom stuff gets overblown. They are both grown ups. I think they can get over it and play well.

I bet the nba will pause the season for the month. Well probably see a few games without fans. I highly doubt they will let all the tv money dissolve.
Mitchell and Gobert will get over it.

We have no idea how this is going to play out. If I called the shots, and there was a responsible window to try finishing the season before September, I would just go straight to the playoffs with current seeding and do best of 3 series or some ****. Maybe even just single-game elimination.

If you’re either LA team, or Houston, or Boston, you get the credit for winning a single-elimination title. If you’re anyone else, you get asterisked.

I predict harmony between Mitchell/Gobert. I remember Donovan saying he didn’t care who picked him during the All Star team draft just as long as he was on Rudy’s team. I’m banking on that love not evaporating just like that.

I think they’ll remain friends even after Gobert is traded to the Knicks this summer for a bevy of draft picks. Then, the Utah Jazz fanbase will have a heart attack over the obvious ties that could lead Mitchell back to New York with his buddy Rudy.

The regular season is bypassed right into playoffs, giving us the 4th seed. We go on a run of epic proportions because the jazz realize it’s much easier to have home court for at least one series, Gobert is named nba finals MVP.
