Stan Van gundy on Gordon Hayward...

I still think Hayward is(can be) an ideal 2nd option on an NBA team. Versatile, athletic, underrated defender, can help to your PG, can rebound, can shoot from anywhere, and is a very good teammate. I believe all this traits of him could be seen much more clear if he wasn't stuck with with his current stupid role. A role that he is supposed to lead a bunch of young guys who are trying to prove themselves in a tanking mode with an inadequate head coach. They don't even know whether they are to win or not to win. Although I'm sure they try their best to win on the court. This kind of team/organization atmosphere is possibly the worst one for a player like Hayward.

Btw, I am all for SVG. That dude is the most fun coach in the NBA, and a very decent one too. We should have grabbed him like a season ago and rebuild the team with him.

Hayward needs to make new friends...playing ball with those Bailey's Moving and Storage clowns won't help improve his game.

...to max out Hayward's basketball skills and talents he needs to play with other high IQ basketball players with better than average athletic ability. Unfortunately, Stockton and Malone aren't walking through those doors anytime soon!

Here's my take on Gordon: if he's next to Jabari he's going to look really, really good an teams will have a difficult time defending them in tandem. If the team maintains a similar status quo structure, then there will be a lot of debate around his value. This brings me to my next point: why the hell aren't we tanking harder?

SVG is absolutely correct. Sometimes listening to an outsider's take can be very beneficial. Of course, for some of the Hayward Homers on this board it won't matter. To them Hayward is still better than lebron and KD.

Stan lives in an idealist world where only 10 players get max contracts from 30 NBA teams and you only get payed over 10 million if you are an All-Star, All-NBA Team, or All-Defensive Team member.

Wish I could live in the at world too, but it doesn't exist, especially not in Utah.

Just because other teams are stupid and offer large contracts to average players doesn't mean we should. Sheesh, did we learn nothing from the AK47 fiasco?

Let the twolves or Celtics waste max money on Hayward, not us!

SVG is absolutely correct. Last year Hayward had a very nice season, given the fact he was given limited minutes. 44% from the floor, 42% from 3, and 14 ppg in 29 mins, while being forced to come off the bench for big part of the year is very very good. Based on this performance, you think of potential, and what he can do given more minutes and more of a leading role. Based on that Jazz offered him a nice contract, which he refused, hoping to realize his potential this year and be worth more. Well, guess what, given bigger responsibility, he simply failed to deliver. 40% FG shooting is quite poor for a guy his size. It seems like he is establishing himself a player who can be solid given 9-10 shots per game, decent starter, but cannot consistently step up. Hence his value from last summer, when the Jazz were offering around 10 mil a year has gone down dramatically this year, now that he failed to realize his potential. Unless he changes that and turns things around, I would agree with SVG: we are looking at the guy who is a little above mid-level, maybe around 6-8 mil range. So far looks like a brilliant move by Lindsey not to extend him last summer.

Don't see any legitimate max guys on the team yet. If that guy is in the draft, and we get him, his new contract will start when Hayward's new one ends, so you could prioritize the money back to the max guy if needed.

After you've set an expectation for the inflated pay-rate both to Hayward and to any other non-star player to negotiate with the Jazz in the future? I think overpaying Hayward would set a bad precedent.

Long story short, I still feel that $10 mil/per is on the higher-end of fair for Hayward.

SVG as always been known as a strong personality who makes bold statements. Personally he irks me. Always confronting never saying anything that helps make a situation better. Also there is a reason he hasn't been offered an NBA head coach position in years.
I wouldn't put to much stock in what SVG has to say, he's just trying to get in the lime light again.
The Jazz offered him GH 10mill. The team is playing better then anticipated and Gordon is our number one option. That makes him worth at least what was offered to him.
BTW Corbin is the coach. He's the one that prescribed who shoots and how much. Gordon is taking 12-16 shots a game because he's being told too. From what we know of Gordon he's always been a pass first player so I don't think its his natural choice to be a volume shooter. Its just someone has too shoot and he's the best option on the floor.
