What's new

start Fes now !!!

Maybe I'm missing something; but while I'll concede that the defensive effort from the start has not be stellar the last 4 games; the far greater problem is The Jazz can't put the ball in the damn basket in the first half.

Points at end of First Half

v GSW - 39
v LAC - 39
v Miami -29
V ORL - 35

How is Fes going to solve this problem or better yet how will he impact it if he starts?
Maybe the same way that Fes does it in the later quarters even though he doesn't score much. The impact of having a player in the middle controlling the paint is underestimated, and many NBA champs have a center that aren't big scorers.

Rarely has the impact of Fesenko (or a player like him) been more apparent than last night. No doubt, his one minute in the first half was a negative--logging two fouls, one a stupid loose ball--but he more than made up for it in the second half. Dwight Howard was clearly not accustomed to the repeated bodying up that Fes inflicted, and it played a role in Howard committing his fourth and fifth crucial PF and being benched for most of the rest of the game. And of course I'm going to attribute some of AJ's higher intensity in Q4 to Fes (and others, too) turning it up a notch or two. Intensity can be contagious. And if you're wanting more scoring, Fes has potential to produce more. He showed his own form of the Weezie last night.

Even I'm not sure that starting Fes is the best option. I think that he's better as an enforcer off the bench for 6 to 10 minutes per half--especially if Utah isn't in or near the penalty--and more if he does better than the alternative.

Yeah, it was all about subbing in Fes in the 3rd. Deron taking over the game had nothing to do with it. The Jazz inability to score in the first half was obviously because Fes was on the bench. Do you all forget how many points Dwight Howard had in first half? If anything, Millsap couldn't guard Brandon Bass.

Williams had 6 pts 4 assists at half. He ended with 30 and 14. Hmmm... Fes?
Howard had 8 points at half, Gortat 4, and Bass 7. Terrible interior defense. Terrible, terrible, terrible.

Homers.

I think the problem with our starts has been an intensity issue more than an issue with the starting 5. It seems like in each of the last few games, we have been waiting to get punched to punch back. We really just need to come out and take it to them. Someone could maybe hack the scoreboard at the ESA to make it look like we are always down 20?

I prefer the suggestion that someone else made -- keep starting Al and Millsap but sub Al out sooner and bring Fess in. Then bring Al back in at the 4 when you sub out Millsap or else at the 5 when Fess gets 2 fouls.

I just love these kind of posts. Reminds me of a few years ago when Derek Fisher had a good game and the board was full of people suggesting that he start over D-Will. Or more recently people arguing that Kosta Koufas was the answer at center.

Priceless.

I don't think fes should start, but I think he should be getting MORE minutes. instead of bringing fes in with 30 seconds left in the first quarter like jerry does, bring him with 3 minutes left.

it's very simple if you manage it correctly and sloan is so old and senile he can't seem to do that. he's always been terrible at rotations

Against the Magic, Fes enters the 3q with the Jazz trailing by 17, 71-54. Leaves at 5:48 of the 4th, Jazz tied 80-80. Only 7 minutes and it made a huge difference. So yeah, I could see him getting only 5 minutes to start the game to get the Jazz going better.

The PLAYBOOK article posted in anohter thread starts the video at 54-74 - ends it at about 76-76 (or thereabouts) Playing Fes was not the only factor that changed about that point. I'm not a fan of Fess starting, but he is playing an effective role for the Jazz and would like to see him get more playing time.

This could be the season that Jerry uses more In Game Strategy becuase there appears to be options and they are not so similar. I thought one real benefit of the mid-90's Jazz was that Big Dog and Eisely were poor-mans versions of the two statues. (I don't think Eiesly smiles all all either.) And that situation - along wth the statues being as consistent as statues, made for a good strategy ot have very consistent rotations. Let's see how this year plays out, but Fess is so different (and now useable) that he could be a good in-game strategy option.

One advantage that Fes has over Al and could have been a factor in the offensive showing during his time in game, is that he is more familiar with the playbook and other players. On both night when the Jazz made runs there were many of the old faces on the court. Having more play options and familiarity with each other can make a huge difference.

On defense, Fes is very active and does not like to give up baskets. Because of this he gets into foul trouble (and he is a bit of a spaz until he settles in, getting better however). But again to my point about him knowing the team system and players. This works again on defense, especially in a zone. D will, AK, CJ, Milsap and Fes have seen how many practice games together?

I think Al can be really good on the Jazz, but I dont think he will be entirely comfortable until next season.
