Start Mitchell at the Point.

It’s a work in progress. That said I think it’s inevitable that Mitchell ends up as a full time or nearly full time pg. his stature and athleticism renders him physically elite at the position.

So far his averages filling in at full time pg:
33p/8a/4r

We’ll keep an eye on that moving forward.

This is about competition level more than a positional change.

In my opinion (please note this is only an opinion), if the big revelation from the 2nd half of the season (not just one game, the 2nd half of the season) is that Mitchell can handle say 20 minutes a night at the PG spot and he can run the point effectively then the implication isn't really about starting Mitchell full time at PG as I don't think that's the best use of Mitchell. The implication would be more around the question of whether it's worth paying Rubio the money he's going to be asking for to provide the things he does for the Jazz in the offseason vs spending that money that Rubio will want to go out and get some more shooting on the wings and pick up a cheap backup PG for Exum instead.

Like you might be able to go get Danny Green and Darren Collison for close to the same price tag that Rubio might be asking for as an example, and you can start a lineup of Exum/Mitchell/Ingles/Favors/Gobert, have Collison/Korver/Green/Crowder/Royce/maybe Allen as your main guys coming off the bench, and then close games with a Mitchell/Green/Ingles/Crowder/Gobert lineup with Korver available if he's having a good shooting night and/or one of those three wings aren't playing well, Favors there if Gobert is having a hard time staying on the floor against particular teams, and Exum also available if he's playing well enough to justify him over one of those three wings or in rare cases maybe even Mitchell himself.

I don't know if Mitchell's current play at PG is sustainable (my gut says no), but if it is it's a good problem for the Jazz management to have going into the offseason.

I'd much prefer having O'Neal there with his size, his finish above the rim and 3pt shooting. Also you have DM and Ingles already handling the ball, that's plenty of ball handler.

It just gives us 1 extra 3pt shooter on the floor. And like @fishonjazz said, I'd prefer DM having the ball in his hand as much as possible.

I do think it's also interesting to note that the two games in recent memory where the Jazz have managed to come out of the gates running instead of falling behind early or being in a close game are the two games where Exum and Mitchell started at PG. Of course the competition was the Knicks and LeBron-less Lakers so it wasn't great, but it's not like Rubio's start against the Cavs who are the worst team in the league meant we blew the doors off them early, or Neto's start resulted in the Jazz getting a leg up on the Magic early either. Rubio and Neto are closer to the classic pure PG model while Exum and in particular Mitchell are more combo guards.

Exum is shooting 30.5% from 3's this year. O'Neal is shooting 38.6%. It's simple, I'd rather have a better 3pt shooter on the floor. Defensively I think they're pretty much comparable.

Also I'd much prefer DM having the ball in his hand more.

Sure, at first, but he’ll adjust mentally and Physically as he does it night in and out.

Furthermore, DM acknowledged just days ago how demanding is to play PG and how hard Ricky and Exum must play. Too much load for our best offensive weapon

With the way Exum's been playing lately and the way Donovan has looked when playing point guard I really don't want to spend 14-16 million a year to bring Rubio back. That money could be better used elsewhere.

Yeah he's even more aggressive now with the ball in his hands more. He just sucks in so much defense too which is good for the team as other guys are more open and he's a really good passer.
