The biggest surprise to me was the lack of anger toward seeing our democracy attacked. I thought we would react protectively. That we would show more pride in what we have, that we would want to tell Putin off. But to this day it seems like people don't care. The gut punch of seeing a man of such low character elected, and any resultant depression, that was understandable. I was surprised that so many did not care to stand up for their country. That's the missing outrage that disappointed me.
When Russia (Putin) swung to the right after the fall of of the USSR and the death of the brief Yeltsin incompetent democracy, the Republikans found themselves agreeing more with the global right than with a progressive left here in the US. Putin repackaged the rightist ideology and used it to subvert the legitimate conservatives and push them even further right. I have heard many Rightists say crazy crap like "what's wrong with Russia?" or "how bad can they be?" I'm sure there are posters here that have more admiration for Putin than someone like Bernie or AOC.
