Study finds Democrats exaggerated mental distress after 2016 election

The biggest surprise to me was the lack of anger toward seeing our democracy attacked. I thought we would react protectively. That we would show more pride in what we have, that we would want to tell Putin off. But to this day it seems like people don't care. The gut punch of seeing a man of such low character elected, and any resultant depression, that was understandable. I was surprised that so many did not care to stand up for their country. That's the missing outrage that disappointed me.

When Russia (Putin) swung to the right after the fall of of the USSR and the death of the brief Yeltsin incompetent democracy, the Republikans found themselves agreeing more with the global right than with a progressive left here in the US. Putin repackaged the rightist ideology and used it to subvert the legitimate conservatives and push them even further right. I have heard many Rightists say crazy crap like "what's wrong with Russia?" or "how bad can they be?" I'm sure there are posters here that have more admiration for Putin than someone like Bernie or AOC.

I'm actually a social worker...grief counselling is just one of the many things I do. I also am a PTSD/trauma therapist. Plenty of work for folks in my profession.

I dont doubt it.

Can you help out around here? There is so much negativity.

Somebody being elected to office is an attack on democracy ??

No, Russia interfering in our democratic institution of free elections was an attack. McCain very early called it an "act of war", and since we are a sovereign nation, I agreed with that opinion.

For an election result ??? Lolololol

Depends on whether, and to what degree, one loves one's country. The leader of a mafia state used active measures in an effort they felt would help in their foreign policy goal of weakening the United States and helping spread discord in my country. Of course that ticked me off.

Does this make you a white nationalist?

Serious question.

I was raised in the 50's/early 60's. American history was my favorite subject, and we were taught a not too realistic version of that history: we were the good guys, the ones in white hats, who always fought on the side of truth and justice. The Vietnam War changed all that for myself, and many others in my generation. I had to learn that the idealized version of history I had been taught was a form of patriotic propaganda. Yet, here it is decades later, and I still believe, despite our flaws and many problems, that we created something here in 1789 that is well worth protecting. I never did kill the idealistic view of my nation in which I had been raised. So, when we are attacked, be it physically, or via cyber warefare, yeah, I still care.
