Summer 2015: FIBA games of Utah Jazz players

Yes, it's true you can not defend someone like Pau Gasol when the referees don't let you touch him. There is no great way to defend except to make Gasol play defense on the other side. Make him (Pau Gasol) get fouls too by playing offense so that he is stressed out. That's the only way to get a favored player by the ref's out of the game.
 
Gasol was on fire. I have no problem with him. Other than he is ugly, and ruined our playoffs for years with the Lakers.

You know what screw him! Greasy spanish *******.
 
A fair bit of sour losing on the french side (and I am French). Truth be told yes Gasol had the refs in his his pocket, but once a pattern is established, it is the team's job to adjust accordingly : Gobert is a great defender already, but still young and left repeatedly 1on1 against Gasol, he suffered. Gasol isn't as tall but he is mighty tall too and so technical. The french should have varied the looks, sent hard doubles from time to time to force Gasol to pick up his dribble early and then try to recover, etc.. they just didn't defend him that well.

Nevertheless this wasn't the deciding factor. The key was poor execution on offense in the 4th and OT when the french should have killed the Spaniards : missing FTs is criminal, Parker and Diaw's misses were actually worse than Batum's : Paker missed 2 FTs in a row at 70 all, than Diaw missed a critical FT that would have made it +4 with 1:27 to go.

Gobert, Lauvergne and De Colo were very good again, sure they did some mistakes, but overall very good. France was let down by its 3 established stars :
- TP 4/17 with 3 TOs for 6 assists
- Batum 3/14 (even though he almost redeemed himself with that corner 3)
- Diaw 2/7.

That's it : the 3 established stars didn't execute on offense during most of the game and the 3 of them failed at the FT line in the critical OT. No need to look further : Gasol was somewhat protected by the refs ? Sure but it happens all the time and it is no coincidence that it happens to players dominating the game. The team failed to adjust on defense but lost the game when it didn't execute on offense.

I hope the 3 established french stars rebound next summer for the pre-olympics and olympics, but we might be witnessing the transition from one generation to another and the very real decline of Tony Parker as seen this NBA season too.... Had to happen at some point.
 
Yeah, as a French fan I'm disappointed, but France didn't play well and they didn't deserve the win. I agree you shouldn't let Gasol score 40 points without at least TRY something else (double team, steals, whatever... at least make other players score).

The strange thing is Gobert utterly destroyed Gasol when they played in Chicago last season, so he could definitely do better. Then again, Gobert is not the reason why they lost here, he actually made good things. Parker and Diaw are just a bit too old now so there was no real leader on the court anymore.

Now they need rebuilding based on PG X / De Colo / Batum / Lauvergne / Gobert with Fournier / Ajinca as 6th / 7th man. PG could be Diot / Heurtel / Westermann. This team still has a future.

Coaching wasn't that good, I would fire Collet, he didn't find the solutions yesterday and on paper, France probably had the better players, so I would change the coach.
 
If you look at the players individually you get the impression that France should rout Spain easily. But they don't play well as a group. There are a lot of good coaches in Europe but the French coach is not one of them, in fact he is hideous. And refs... This is semi-finals ffs, let the guys play hard. Instead every single touch was a foul, which effectively turned this into a WNBA game and helped otherwise helpless Spain. Americans may or may not know but this generation of Spain is arguably the most disliked national team across Europe because they're whiny floppers. They play the refs more than their opponents. In this case this helped them tremendously.

Gobert got exposed on his 1vs1 defense. He should not go for blocks that often. Polished offensive bigs ala Brook Lopez and Pau Gasol will eat him alive inside. Gobert is young, he may be a DPOY caliber player already and I'm sure he will improve on this department. And remember, we have Derrick Favors! The most underrated big in the entire league!

Too bad clueless French coach never even bothered to use Bear offensively even when he had to try just to tire old Gasol... So we don't even know if he has progressed offensively. Fortunately we have a much better head coach.

This also why these international tournaments are so important for players' development and growth : Gobert will have learned a lot in this defeat, in being beaten by Gasol, in being tricked into fouls, etc.. All this on a "winner takes all" game, in front of 27 000 fans, with massive pressure. These are the games that make you players grow. One game like this is worth many many many regular season games.
 
I'm still waiting for an apology from that German trash that somehow became a mod... There are a few Spanish jazzfanz here that might have taken offense with his comment.

Except that he goes on with a neg rep. No I got his case, he's one of these supremacist German that refers to Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain as the PIGS, in an effort to feel better about his small weiner.

We should have never joined the German run EU in the 1st place, I want my peseta back!

I thought the PIGS thing was in reference to their economic policies that are seen as selfish to the rest of the EU.
