Taylor Hendricks Hype Thread

Love this perspective from Tony Jones that I hadn't considered before. From Tony's great article on the Athletic today:

If anybody is on the fence about subscribing to see Tony's work, just pay for it. It's great.
Completely agree about the confidence thing but he most definitely was not even close an unknown heading into UCF. He played with some of the most high profile guys in high school and could certainly have gone to a bigger school but wanted to stick with his brother a little longer.

So you knew who Taylor Hendricks was before the college season started?

Hendricks being the 9th overall pick after having a composite HS rank of 67th (according to 247, who had him ranked 84th) is incredibly rare for a one and done player.

If you aren't in the top 50 of your class, it's pretty rare for you to be one and done, much less a lottery pick.

You're really nitpicking if you're pushing back on Hendricks being an unknown prospect in draft circles prior to the season starting. He might have been a footnote in the biggest draft junkies pre-season outlooks.

The only other guy who comes to my mind in recent years was Josh Primo, who had a huge range among the scouting services, (247 had him in the 20's while others had him in the 80s or not even in the top 100) and we saw how that turned out (even before the weird **** he was not looking good).

I’m sure it’s easier to adjust when you were a blue chip and have been a blue chip recruit for a long time….but I also think Key’s confidence is innate and realistically the reason why he’s accepted by his peers and the coach is that they think he’s good. Likewise, I think TH is probably just not naturally as confident and probably got cooked in training camp.

If Hendricks was playing well, they’d be talking about his background has helped him and he has a chip on his shoulder. If Keyonte was struggling, they’d say it’s because he’s a spoiled primadonna or whatever. These things are nice to write stories about, but you can spin it whichever way you want.

Dont let Taylor meet with the team therapist too much!

Just think we could’ve had Whitmore instead.

Look I am the driver and one of the few leftover passengers on the Tay Henny bus... I had Whitmore higher on my board too. The behind the scenes stuff better have been very damning (medicals, attitude, college coach stuff).

I think Whitmore must have told half the teams in the league he didn't want to play there.

Pisses me off Dok was #2 on their draft board but they took Whitmore off completely. Should’ve just kept DM and Gobert. My faith in the jazz ability to build a contender is seriously waning.
It's the Utah stigma. I'm sure they are surveying the possible big-names out there and finding precious few that will agree to spending any length of time in Utah.
