What's new

The backpacking/ hiking/ camping thread

Yes, real wild goats on the Timp hike. They were pretty tame from what I could see.

We also saw a moose. Apparently you have to watch out a bit more for them, but it didn't bother us.

I had a moose chase me in Yellowstone. I was on a little moped and was going as fast as I could go (maybe 20 mph).... it got pretty close to catching me before giving up

Yeah, I've never seen a Moose in real life but I hear they're absolutely huge and not the smartest animals so they're dangerous because they get spooked easily.

This conversation reminds me of this:

I've been fairly close to moose on a couple occasions and never felt threatened by them or worried they would chase me. That being said, I've heard first hand accounts from someone who literally had to tie himself in a tree because a moose chased him and that was the only refuge he could find. And then the moose didn't leave for a couple hours.

From last year

This was from summer of 2013. We were within 15 yards of this guy and a female.

Really? That's kind of cool? Are they assholes? I remember the marmots on Mount Whitney are the dicks of creature world. Those little ****ers! There was no wildlife to be seen on SG.

They are used to people in normal weather. Much more jumpy if you encounter them when there is snow on the ground.

I've had quite a few encounters with moose, both in Utah and Montana. I had one almost stomp my dog in a park in Hamilton, Mt. She was still young and when I started yelling at her, she looked back and forth between the moose and then me, and just panicked and froze. When I realized she was in real trouble, I turned and ran, yelling at the same time. Luckily, the dog got the idea and followed.

I was float tube fishing in quake lake, Mt., and I was able to get about 15 yards from a cow with a tiny calf wading and feeding in the water.. That's way closer than I would ever get to a moose on land, but I was in deep enough water that she would have had to swim after me. She never even flinched, just went on dunking her head to eat the moss.

By far, the coolest thing I've ever seen moose wise, happened when I was bow hunting on a ranch called anshutz. It's on the border of Utah/Wyoming, if you drive up to Evanston, and then drop back down into Utah. Anyway, I was hunting deer when I jumped two big bull moose about 30 yards away. They were both in velvet, and as they ran off through the quakies, they had to tip their heads from side to side to avoid hitting their horns on the trees. It was amazing watching those two huge beasts gracefully sway back and forth as they trotted away.

Hiked Angel's Landing yesterday and Observation Point in Zions today. Awesome hikes. I'd post pics, but photobucket is having issues. Anyone have recommendations for a new image hosting site for me to post pics on Jazzfanz?

It's called Zion. Not Zions.

I've done Angel's Landing a couple times but not since I turned 20. It is pretty scary towards the summit. But a really awesome hike and amazing view.

lol, Zions is a pet peeve.

Hurrican is all good with me. I hope you know I'm 100% Utah native as well.

Edit: I'm a whatever you Mormons want to call a "son of Utah Pioneers" or whatever. I'm a ****ing "Young" and descended in one way or another from Brigham Young. So please don't try to get in a "I'm more Utah than you are" battle with me. I'll win. My Atheist *** will win that one every day all day. My middle name is Brigham, my last name is Young, my first name Is Jared. My Ancestors settled much of Southern Utah.

Anyway, if you want to play this game, I'm ready.

Photobucket is working, finally. I took this pic from Observation Point. Awesome hike in Zion - 8 miles round trip, but totally worth it.

I think it's technically called "Zions", at least by us locals.

How many Zions are there? Did you go to all of the Zions, or just a few?

I think there is an apostrophe in there somewhere. Like Zi'ons.
