The Bell Effect

First of all, kudos to Raja Bell. He had his best game of the year. Now I want to see him play with the same effort and make some jump shots. The biggest thing I notice is that when the team plays on the road the rookies still seem like deers caught in headlines so it is nice that the veterans stepped up last night.

It was nice to see Hayward play with more aggression, when the kid doesn't think and just plays he can be the player I think he is. Again nice road win for the team.

As far as CJ goes, (I only saw the first half), his body language is just bad. You it seemed as though he was pouting when he finally got in the game. Personally, I would trade CJ simply because the team doesn't really need him anymore. Try to get at least a second round pick for him.

Wow, monster game from R. Bell: he made 3 shots! The fact that he is being praised for such a good game shows just how bad he has been. 9 points from your starting SG is very weak and that is by far his best output of the season. Yes, he played good D but overall his D does NOT make up for a non-existent O.

It was very interesting to see how the Jazz were able to jump out to an early lead with their wings hitting a few shots. I have tended to correlate the slow starts with Big Slow but now I see it is more likely R. Bell and 4 on 5 offense.

Looks like we are stuck with Bell as a starter for quite awhile now. Lets hope he keeps it up.

downside to his "great" game is that is deserved spot on the bench will stay empty for the moment. and he will continue to start

As an addendum to The Bell Effect, we can now add the "Monta Ellis Myth." Great job by Bell last night, no question. His performance against Ellis was the exception, however, not the rule. So every time we play an actually decent, good, or great NBA team and Raja murders us out there, we'll get reminded of this night as proof that he's indispensable.

As another reminder, the first 7 games of Bell's season actually happened. But thanks to the Monta Ellis Myth, we can pretend they didn't.

Considering everyone else on the team couldn't guard Ellis without fouling him, he did a very good job. Quit looking at the boxscore and look at the impact he had on the game at key moments. He had a direct hand in winning the game.

Hopefully last nights game gave Hayward and Bell the confidence they need. If those two can get it going it makes the Jazz much more dynamic and will open it up for the big guys down low.

Good point about the vets (like Bell) SHOWING the young pups (Hayward, Burks, MILES) how to get up on your man defensively. Most youngsters are kinda shy to do that. Hayward is such a good ball handler and passer, he is needed on the 1st unit to help out Harris, who is a so-so passer. Howard is the vet to again SHOW the youngsters around him how to get tough on D. Coach Ty's rotations, IMO, are very well thought out.
Right now, Burks is playing more aggressive and smarter than CJ, so he's gettin' the minutes. Raja and his D are more valuable than CJ's contributions right now, so CJ's minutes are shrinking...

Edit: Opposing 2 guards have a PER of 19.4 when Raja's on the court (with an efg% of .556). Overall, opposing 2 guards have a PER of 12.8 against the Jazz (with an efg% of .465).

Is Josh Howard a two? I haven't looked up Howard, nor checked the stats today, but the last I checked, while Bell opponent PER was 19.4, Miles and Burkes were both over 25.

Burks has played exclusively at the 2, and while he's been on the court opposing 2's have accumulated a PER of 3.4. 82games.com has also included some of Howard's minutes as minutes at the 2 (and none of Hayward's...which is a mistake IMO), and apparently a small amount to both Harris and Tinsley. They all do quite well in opponents' PER (at the 2). CJ Miles comes in at 21.1.

Bell had his best game of the season, but it was only one game. Please also remember that Raja played for Golden State and was practiced against Ellis a lot. Personal knowledge of a players habits and tendencies is a huge advantage when playing someone. Ellis also scored over 30 points. I would still like to see Raja's time cut to about 14 minutes a game.

Raja played 1 game with Golden State. I think he got injured and was out for the season. He did not practice against Ellis much. He may have watched him in practice.
