Not that it should matter to anyone other than myself, but I still want to make clear, because one can be considered unhinged to mention fascism and Trump in the same sentence, that simply because Trump is obviously authoritarian in temperament and approach, and has taken, of late, to using well known fascist catch phrases, does not mean I personally believe Trump is destined to be America’s Hitler, or that he will not meet a tsunami of resistance should he seek to implement some of the ideas he’s spoken of in campaign appearances, and social media. Should he return to power. And personally, I won’t bat an eye, we’re all in this world, not of it, as far as I’m concerned that is, and we will all deal with things in our own way regardless of what dawns.
It is not unhinged to draw a connection, however. What I’m saying is being echoed by many in America’s intellectual class, on the left mostly, but some strong conservative voices recognized Trump as demagogue right from day one. Someone like George Wills comes to mind, as one example.
There are historical forces at work here, as there always are. And noting them is not unhinged. Far Right movements are afoot, not just here in the US. I guess easy for me to say, and maybe arrogant per usual, but I think we should want to recognize all the forces at work in our lifetime, and In this moment, and in our nation. I fully understand if someone thinks all such talk of “dictator”, and the new f word, is foolish bs, but again, this does not mean therefore we’re heading for the darkest days of the 21st century, it’s simply noting a trend. Mind boggling, but that’s my opinion. I’m not really trying to scaremonger in mentioning the f word. It’s only historical context as far as I’m concerned. My apologies.
