You absolutely do not know that.letting mathews go was obviously one of the biggest mistakes the jazz have ever done. they could have resigned him the day he was eligible for way less than what portland offered him when the 7 days were over. jazz just didnt make a move and mathews even said publicly he wanted to stay in utah....
of course Matthews can say anything after the fact, but he was quoted in a couple news stories that he was never contacted by the Jazz at all, and had he been contacted with an offer, he would have signed it - - before it even got the to point of Portland making their offer. But the Jazz wanted to see how the market valued him.

Portland Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews said that he preferred to stay with the Jazz and that Utah was his first choice last summer, prior to him signing with Portland as a restricted free agent.
Matthews stressed that he has moved past the signing and is enjoying his run with the Blazers. However, he conceded that he did not want to leave Salt Lake City and initially was not looking forward to a change of scenery during the early part of his career.
Matthews said that the Jazz had a chance to make him an offer but never followed through. Once Utah did not step up, Matthews made a business decision...
