Since when did being a racist count as a "youthful indescretion"? Throwing a keggar when your parents are out of town is a "youthful indescretion". Hating black people is something that came from his heart. Hard to believe his "apologies" weren't spurnned on by mounting civil rights pressure and his desire to stay in office.
Why do we immortalize the founding fathers in this country? Many of those guys OWNED black people! Even Abe Lincoln argued a case for a slave owner to get his slaves returned in his legal career.
I guess it could be argued that despite their short comings they did do some amazing and great things in their lifves that forever changed the course of history and improved the lives of hundreds of millions of people.

It seems that Mods get special treatment. That is awesome. I remember when I went around the profanity filter -- even though it was a word a mod was using also -- and I got a quick infraction. Where is Vinylone when you need him?
I'd say you could make that argument for a guy who was a Senator for half a century or whatever, although I'm no big fan of Byrd by any means.
