The Inevitable Favs Reunion

We have enough offense that we should be bringing Udoh back on a minimum.
Or whatever. An essentially strictly backup center shouldn’t be eating any kind of substantial money. If they can ALSO play NEXT to Gobert in a legitimate way then that is a totally different scenario.

I’d much rather rummage through the scrap heap for a Vonleh/Baynes or give Morgan a real chance than give Favors more than $5 million a year. It’s honestly not even close.

Not sure I’d put Baynes in the “scrap heap” category

True. But he’s also 33 coming off a career year on a not-playoff team. Feels like some sucker’s gonna pay him and it’s not going to be good.

I think Favors and Gobert can play with one another for up to 10 minutes a game. I think there’s ample evidence to prove it.

I’m not saying that bringing Favors back is the best scenario, but since best scenarios are rarely afforded a small-market team in Salt Lake City, you’d have to consider getting Favors on a good deal pretty ****ing good.

His back injuries are the most worrying thing. If he’s healthy, then he’s definitely in the “desirable” category.

Tony has said multiple times that Favors isn’t coming for less than the MLE. I read his most recent article, and he never discusses Favors taking the BLE, so that’s a pretty poorly referenced story.
Felt too good to be true. I would imagine NO would just give him 7-8M in a one year deal if all he had was BAE on the table. Thought maybe we had an under the table arrangement with him... take BAE this year and get a player option for next year or we will give you a raise using an exception or some ****.

On a good deal.

Favors and Gobert on the floor at the same time only works if there are three other off-the-dribble shooters, which the Jazz might actually have. Kiss effective drives in those lineups goodbye, though (and the subsequent actions).

We have those shooter for 10 minutes. And I’m not as pessimistic about the drives as you are.

Cy makes a good point that there wouldn't be a mystery of how Favors would fit in here, though. That carries some value. But that value literally diminishes if we're spending $35-$45 million a year on centers that can't drive, shoot, or pass.

Am I the only person who would rather have Meyers Leonard than Derrick Favors?

He's 7'1" vs 6'9" (Favors real height) and shoots 40% from 3P and 80% from the free throw line. I mean I'd take Aron Baynes out of the three, but having a big who can hit open 3 pointers and do some different things than Rudy has to be part of the equation right?
If the choice is Favs at the full MLE or Meyers at the minimum and we retain JC and use our MLE for something else then I’d probably take Meyers.

The shooting would help but those two are in different worlds defensively and if we run the same defensive stuff we are now then the center has to be pretty damned good on defense.

I wonder what the market will be like for Marc Gasol.
He is thinking of playing in Spain. I think that sounds kind of cool.

I think it's worth kicking the tires but I don't think it'll happen. Having Conley at some point has to be worth ****ing SOMETHING, though.

No question.

But maybe in that situation, we actually have to run some different defensive schemes, and I think that would actually make us a better team overall.

I feel like Leonard's value is probably more around the BAE-amount. Which, I don't know, probably still sounds better to me than Favors at the MLE (I'm probably undervaluing Favors, I am just sick of overpaying for his total contribution [he couldn't play big minutes even if we/he wanted/needed him to which puts a hard ceiling on his contribution] and pulling **** to make it work).

This could be our saving grace, though. If all the sudden we have Gasol coming off the bench, it makes it a lot easier to have Conley off the bench, too. How much is that worth if we translated it into Gasol's salary?

Let me put it a different way:

Favors at the full MLE and Conley starts...

Or Gasol at the MLE and Conley comes off the bench?

You love Gasol... he looked kinda washed in the Boston series. Would be nice to have a center that shoots a little.

I wonder if the raps do a one year overpay for a lot of their guys and try and keep it together before going after Giannis.

I am going to be so ****ing dejected if Favors gets the MLE.

THE JAZZ NEED TO DO DIFFERENT THINGS INSTEAD OF CLINGING TO SECURITY BLANKETS, CAPPING THE CEILING ON THE COURT, AND HAMSTRINGING THEMSELVES FINANCIALLY TO DO SO.

Nah, he certainly wouldn’t be my first choice. But, looking at the artificial constrains the FO places on themselves, parlaying a Gasol signing into a Conley move to the bench may be the ceiling of potential offseason moves that don’t include Conley defaulting to the starting lineup next year.

And I agree he’s probably washed. But washed Gasol > TB. And he can shoot the three and spread the floor. Plus him and Conley off the bench isn’t bad as a tandem.

Ahem. Gasol is a fabulous passer. He’d be the only big on the roster that could do it.
