What's new

The Jazz are better built for the playoffs this year

The hope is that NAW will be able to defend decently on the perimeter and hit the open 3 and move the ball without killing the offense. Hopefully such a low-usage proposition is reasonable. But we essentially did nothing to improve the team unless he does just that. Hopefully house and Paschall can give us enough nasty on D to be a difference maker over years past. And hopefully JB and Forrest get minutes over NAW considering their better numbers across the board and familiarity with the system. At this point I view NAW as nothing more than a body to cover for injuries.

Nah, if he is in the rotation that means he outplayed someone to get there. That would be cool.
I don't know if I believe that. This may be true but I am not sure it is about outplaying anyone in Quin's system. I think it is more how well do you stay within the system Quin has established and do you do it without making many blatant mistakes. I guess you could say that is outplaying someone if you do that better than someone else, but it is also pretty restricting to players that make mistakes. Yes I still do not understand why Butler does not get more burn. He played really well during the recent stretches without our main guys. I would hope he gets a chance rather than play NAW and hear them say "well he has more time on the court so he can be relied on" or some such crap, when JB just isn't given that time. I guess time will tell how Quin will play this out.

They went all in on this roster thinking they'd be what Phoenix is this year but they're obviously not.

It's going to be a ****-show when all we have to show for the Mitchell-Gobert-Conley era is a couple second-round losses.
Still funny that we hitched our wagon onto a combination of Bogey/Conley as the 3rd big player, rather than targeting / trading for a true 3rd superstar.

It's weird that we still use Niang/Favors/End of bench as scapegoats in the playoffs.

The Jazz lost in the playoffs because they werent healthy. No amount of amazing bench players is going to change that series.

If Conley is healthy we have home court in a matchup vs the Suns in the WCF.

The Jazz need a guard who can both defend well enough not to be a loophole on defense and shoot well enough not to be a loophole on offense. I think NAW is supposed to replace Ingles and fit that role. The problem is that Clarkson can't guard, so teams can attack through him on offense. The other problem is that Forrest can't shoot, so teams won't bother to guard him on the perimeter. NAW is the guy who can fill those gaps. He can also create in pick-and-roll. If he's good enough, I'd expect NAW to be in the regular rotation before the playoffs.

It's not easy to get that 3rd All Star-level player. That's why I would have taken a swing on Grant or Randle, despite their flaws.

Thats one way to look at and definitely the only way you would ever look at it.
Another way to look at is that after hayward left us high and dry we weren't expected to make the playoffs. Donovan was thought to be a decent defender rather than multiple time all star and nobody thought Gobert was going to be a multiple time all star. Looking at it that way, this team has been a monumental success. The franchise as a whole in the time it has existed in slc has been an overwhelming success and one of the best franchises in the entire league. We are lucky. Wouldn't know it by reading jazzfanz though. You would think we had similar success as the kings and twolves or something.

It is exactly that success that has raised hopes and expectations. A couple visits to the finals just whetted everyone's appetite and years of being on the edge of being contenders has everyone sporting gigantic blue balls after being sent home without even a goodnight kiss. This is what entitlement without climax looks like I suppose.

The reason that Phoenix is so formidable this year is that they don't have any glaring flaws. Everyone can score at some level, and everyone can defend at some level. Then they've got Chris Paul who is the best floor general in the league this season, despite his scoring being down a bit. However, their ceiling isn't as high as Milwaukee's when Giannis is going ape **** and their other guys are shooting well.

Jazz have to feel good about their chances against teams like Dallas, Memphis and even Phoenix, since they play traditional drop-5 coverage and are limited in their ability to move Rudy out of the paint. Scary matchups for the Jazz might include Warriors (due to their switching/blitzing defense), Denver (because Jokic is extremely difficult to defend), and possibly even Minnesota (Towns surrounded by long athletes). Playing the Clippers would be a drag, but without Paul George playing the Jazz should be able to get through.
