The market for Enes Kanter

I heard on a podcast that GS might be willing to give up assets(picks) to get rid off David Lee's salary, but they might need some short-term solution in return to help them in their championship push this year. Would you be willing to get David Lee for this year and next + draft pick for Kanter?

The calculations are kind of complicated, but in short it has to do with them paying luxury tax next year if they have to resign all their prospects. They were discussing trading him for Kevin Garnett or similar piece. Now Kanter is not that similar, but he's still a big who can give them scoring off the bench...

Hell no. Not unless Barnes or Green come over as well. I don't want any more draft picks from them. Waste of an asset. I'd rather play it out and see what he gets in RFA before giving him to the Warriors for peanuts. It was fine to make the deal last offseason because they were tanking and in need of assets. Trading Kanter to GSW for David Lee feels like buying high and selling low.

I've been wondering if Brooklyn would consider Burke and Kanter for Jack? I'm sure they want to get younger and think they may do it.

Would we though? They have virtually no picks to offer. And I feel like we could do better.

I agree with this. Ideally, the Jazz would package Kanter, Burke and a bunch of draft picks to go after the best young player that hits the market. If a deal like that doesn't materialize, then you hold on to them, see how RFA goes and then look at making a deal similar to that next year.

This off season the following team have the cap space to sign Enes Kanter to a max or near max deal without moving any of their pieces:

Philadelphia
New York
Milwaukee
Lakers
Boston
Orlando

Philly have Embiid and Noel. New York are going after way bigger fish than Enes - so are the Lakers. Boston have plenty of young, promising forwards and Orlando have Vucevic who they really don`t want to pair with Enes. I`m not sure how Enes would fit with Jabari Parker, but Milwaukee seem to be the only team in real need of a big that could offer him a lot of money.

There are other teams that could create cap space, but if they do, Enes Kanter would not be their first choice to spend on. I don`t see San Antonio replacing Duncan with Enes Kanter, Dallas Chandler with him or Memphic Gasol.

So - who are going to make him this ridicoulous offer we are talking about all the time? The Knicks? The Lakers.

Yep, I did this exact investigation last week and there just isn't a lot of holes for Enis to hide in, which is why his deal probably didn't get done because the Jazz probably have someone on staff who has figured this out as well. It looks like if we wanted Enes for 11 million or so on a new contract, we could probably just sign him, as it would probably be the most anyone else can offer. He has value at that price.

I think the Lakers and Bucks are legit possibilities. They have major questions in their frontcourt. I'm guessing Millsap goes back to Atlanta. Detroit may need someone if Monroe leaves.

Another sleeper is Golden State. Warriors fans like him. Warriors need a back-up PF/C and aren't thrilled with Speights or Lee.

Lots of teams could see Enes as an ideal 3rd big and starter depending on rotations and injuries.

That was going to be my answer. With the cap getting a $20M bump in 2016, almost every team would be in play for Enes. In fact, if I were Kanter's agent, I'd tell the Jazz to give him $15M or he'll just sign the QO. If he takes $7.5 and then gets a 4yr, $60M deal ($15M under the new cap won't be all that much), that's better than a Jazz offer of $11-$12M for 4 years. Kanter can get injury insurance to cover the 3 year period he gives up by not signing a guaranteed deal this summer.

You mean the Ty Corbin who benched Enes and did nothing to defend him when the media made such a big deal out of Utah losing every game when Kanter starts for Favors? Of course, Ranadive runs that team and Ty is only a placeholder until the season ends. Corbin will be coaching church ball next year.

How many times do the Jazz have to let guys go to market, either to lose them or over pay them before you or the Jazz figure out that letting the market determine a players value is a huge gamble. The only time the Jazz were smart is when they signed Favors to his contract. In recent history, Every other time they've blown the negotiating game.

Ummmm the market always determines players' value. Favors deal was not viewed as a home run when he signed it either.

Of their recent free agents they signed Favors and Burks before they hit the market. It takes two parties to agree to a deal. Hayward felt he was getting lowballed by Utah and Kanter felt the same. It's not like the Jazz said, "we're not making an offer...just have other teams set your price." It's like that in EVERY sport. Teams try to come to agreements at prices they deem fair. Sometimes the evaluations by the team and player's agent are close and they can meet in the middle. Sometimes the values are way off. WE don't know what Hayward or Kanter demanded, nor what the Jazz offered.

It's funny how some posters want to have it both ways. A lot were saying Hawyard's value was around $8M/per. What if DL had offered him the same amount of money as Favors? This board would have BLOWN UP. Everyone would have said there was NO WAY Hayward would get that much in free agency. I think the consensus was that Utah overpaid for Alec at $10M/per. SO which players should we let the market determine the value for and which should we sign early?

The problem Kanter will have if he does this is he will see a dramatic drop in minutes, because the Jazz would have no real investment in making sure he hits 30 minutes a night. How much will he be able to show as a 5th year player getting 19 minutes per night? That dude isn't getting a 15 million a year contract no matter how high the salary cap rises. Kanter has about a month to convince a team to give up assets to land him from the Jazz. Otherwise the balance starts tipping to the Jazz being the ones to give him the most money, and that won't be more than Favors is getting. . .
