The Non-Jazz NBA Thread in the Jazz Section

Only if we keep pace with them. That is going to be hard as I don’t think we see Giannis in a Bucks uniform again.
More slop in the pit is better. They will win some games vs bad teams and lose some, creating a higher bottom.

I also don't think Giannis would sit the rest of the season if they didn't trade him. I would assume he would want to at least play some games for a final sendoff. And if they do trade him they will get something back. I also don't see Doc Rivers tanking too hard so he would probably have to be fired for me to really fear the Bucks getting below us.

i mean, they are 3 games up on the worst record in the league - of course they have a shot at 1. they have some work to do of course, but they've been consistently losing (gaining?) ground over the course of the last couple months. if they continue this trajectory, no reason they can't have the worst record in the league if they want it enough.

He will sit the rest of the season if he's a buck. 6 weeks for re-evaluation puts us in the middle of March. They will be like 7-8 games out of the play in by then... maybe more. Doc does make chicken salad sometimes but dude is checked out and likely not coming back next year either way. He was a great tanker in Boston when they needed him to be.

bucks and grizzlies are two teams ahead of the jazz that they have absolutely have to worry about. mavs as well. as recently as 12/31, the jazz were ahead of the hornets in the standings, who 2-3 weeks later weren't even a concern.

Our baseline is so much higher than teams like Wash/Brooklyn. Sacramento is coached by a total dumbass and has the pouty vets needed to just suck the life out of the end of the season. Pacers may do it but all they have to do is decide to start resting Pascal and they can get really tanky again. NOP likely push past us but it will be close. Unless we completely engage in the grossest stuff imaginable I just don't see it.

Yeah I'd rank it Bucks, Mavs, Grizz of that group in order of worry. Bucks roster without Giannis is disgusting. Mavs likely move Marshall and/or Gafford and likely start pulling more levers with Coop... already started doing it a little. On top of a very hard schedule to close.

This tank race may be like no other we have ever seen.

you make good points (iow, on paper you seem to be right), but i looked up the standings on 11/31, 12/15 and 12/31 and the reality is washington, sacto and indiana have gained ground. hence the reason i used the term trajectory. if they continue on this trajectory/pace, they'll be in a good spot.

the nets have stayed about even throughout the season - never falling below 2 or 3 games of the jazz which is where they are now.

i probably go bucks, grizz, mavs (with the hope that flagg will be so good down the stretch, he'll will them to a few wins they wouldn't otherwise get.
