Some of you guys probably need to go give your wife a big smooch and thank her for never allowing your taste of cars to be brought into the marriage or seen anywhere near your homes.

I could light up the tires in all 4 gears in my 240. It weighed practically nothing and my uncle, who knew his ****, helped with the engine rebuild so we tweaked it to get more horsies than stock. Way more. It was nearly undriveable in the snow, but that didn't stop a 17-year-old from trying. I never officially timed it or anything, but in Ogden at the time (mid-80's) there was a stretch of I-15 between like 30th and 21st street that was about exactly 1/4 mile and no one I met could beat me over that stretch, including several guys in Mustangs, a couple of GTOs, camaros, and even a porsche 944 that belonged to the dad of a kid from my high school. That car was a blast. I eventually put in dual 12" woofers and a serious pioneer system (at the time the pinnacle of automotive tunes) with, get this, an in-dash CD player/tape deck combo and a dozen speakers. Let that mullet fly!!!!!

[edit: the spot was the one straight stretch between 31st and 24th, and then there was a mile stretch between 21st and 12th. Quick on and off.]

Hope you have good fire coveraege

It's one of the safest and most well-constructed cars to ever hit the market, which explains the unprecedented amount of acclaim and the huge number of awards. The Tesla is an amazing achievement in engineering, and I wouldn't base my opinion on an out of context Youtube video.

SMFH.

Funnest car I ever owned, hands down. More fun than my vette, even more fun than my Prius if you can imagine that! Rebuilt it during high school, drove it for 5 glorious years pre- and post-mission. Loved it. Sold it for a family car (1991 Ford Escort), and have regretted selling it ever since. Now I will spend the weekend going through old pictures to try to find a pic of mine. It was redder than this, a deep blood red.

Absolutely beautiful car. Aren't the 240s notorious for impaling drivers if you get into head-on collisions though?

The 240 is nicer than the 280-- but at least the 280 is quite nice in its own right, and doesn't have that murderous-reputation :)

EDIT: Sold this for a ****ing Escort?!?!

My deepest condolences.

I would love to have a Tesla, just cannot justify the money when considerably cheaper alternatives with competitive fuel efficiency exist. And as a lux auto alone it just doesn't do it for me. Now if the price came down to the 40k range then maybe.

They are planning a much cheaper car in 2014. Model S will eventually come down in price as well.

What if they retrofitted a 240? Hmmm

Ok so about 8 years ago I almost bought another 240 Z. I drove it and it was sweet. The guy had done some real work to it, modernized some things, like recaro seats and such, great stereo. But the frosting was what he did to the engine. Totally rebuilt stock, with a blower and other tweaks. He was outputting over 300 horsies, and the torque was nuts. It was almost hard to get started from a standing stop since the tires would just peel loose with that much power, but once they grabbed wow did it go. So much fun. Instead I spent the money on a new used SUV for my wife's daycare at the time. Yay.

I had not seen the youtube video and that is not what I based my post on. I was referring to the fact that 2 other Tesla's in the past month have caught fire when debris in the road was flipped up perforating the lithium-ion battery packs causing the cars to catch on fire.

It appears that if the battery is breached by a significant impact with a large metallic object, the front of the car has a chance of catching fire. Not exactly a deal breaker for an otherwise amazing car.

I wouldn't count on that doing anything but crushing Tesla. They're a niche, small business model able to customize and offer high customer service where big auto cannot. If they start opening up to the masses then GM and Ford will quickly adapt, and crush them with their far superior manufacturing infrastructure. Big auto could make a $50,000 comp to Tesla but it wouldn't be marketable even though it's $35K less (minimum). Teslas are bad *** and that's why they sell; it's not about the price tag much.

I love Tesla's, but I don't ever see it as an everyman's car.

Tesla has a significant technological advantage over others though. It's not like Ford can just come out with a car that gets 200+ miles per charge, earn a 5 star safety rating, and win Motor Trend card of the year, and keep it under $70k. That's why demand for Tesla has exceeded their production capacity for the past couple of years. You might be right about it being a niche product, but that's only for the time being. EVs may be a few years away from becoming mainstream, but Tesla continue to building their charging infrastructure, and their reputation. I would be very surprised if they fail to gain traction with a more affordable product.

I know it's difficult to imagine things changing, but thing do change. And they change all the time. EVs offer many advantages over gasoline cars, and it's a matter of time before they catch on. And Tesla has a head-start on others.

But hey, who knows? You might be right. If a bigger company comes up with a comparable car for an affordable price, I'd buy that instead!
