The Stretch 4 Discussion Thread

I'd add Mario Hezonja to the list. More of a SF but at 6'8" could play some PF. He's 23 so fits in perfect with the group age wise. He's euro and lets face it DL likes his euro's. If the Magic match a max offer to Gordon, they can't afford him. He's not great, takes some bad shots and not much of a playmakeer. You would be betting on his size, athleticism, and Quin being able to coach him up to a pretty good player. Does the MLE get him? I don't know. Do to unique circumstances though, he is unrestricted.

MLE absolutely gets him... that’s 8M a year. I’d try to get him for less on a multi year deal. I think he is big enough and rebounds well enough to play in one big lineups.

I’d love to see what our development staff could do with him.

So hypothetically, we could trade Burks and Udoh for Carroll (http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=y7f7zwnt ) Brooklyn does it to save money and maybe they have more faith in Burks becoming something for them than Carroll.

Then we sign Tolliver to a Thabo or Jerekbo type deal. Overall, we get two more needed players for SF and PF while not sacrificing 2019 cap space. We also get to keep Jerekbo and Thabo so we are that much deeper.

If DMC came in I assume that means Favs is out... if Favs is out I’m keeping Udoh and will sacrifice Jonas. We could actually do AB for DMC straight up I believe.

I'm a big Hezonja fan, but I don't consider him a stretch 4 option at all. He is a SG/SF. And I think he should be on of our first targets.

Ever heard of Demarcus Cousins?
What about him? NO can offer him a huge contract and just make minor moves to get under the tax. That was the beauty of getting Chicago to take Asik's contract. Cousins will also require time to get back to his old self. I think NO keeps Mirotic next season.

There's also a chance Washington goes hard after Cousins. The Mirotic train left the station at the deadline. Maybe 2019, but Jazz would likely have to renounce Ricky, and not have re-signed Favors or Exum to have enough under the cap.

I wonder if Miami would have any interest in Alec Burks expiring contract for Olynyk. Jazz have a tendency to keep an eye on players they were interested in for years. Not as good defensively as Favors, but has the ability to open up the paint for Gobert.

Trade or stretch Burks.

I wonder if Burks playoff performances were enough to tempt a GM to try him. I could see how his one-year deal and propensity for circus shots could tempt a rebuilding team to take him on. They give up extended salary and bring burks in to make exciting shots but doesn't injure their tank.

I think if you put him out there with Royce and Rudy that they can defend well enough. There are so few guys in the league that can punish wings in the post and offensive rebounding is now looked at as archaic.

Hezonja wouldnt be a starting 4 and I dont think he would be a better backup 4 than Jae. He probably wants to go somewhere he can get guaranteed minuets after struggling to find the court in Orlando.

The Jazz were a couple million over the cap during the 2 finals seasons, but I get it, that’s not exactly tax spending territory.

Let me rephrase my statement: The Miller family won’t stand in the way of paying who they’ve gotta pay if they legitimately feel as if they have a championship caliber team.

As other posters have said, you don’t go into the tax for anything less than what you feel like is a slam dunk, but should that opportunity present itself, I think ownership won’t shy away from the scenario.
Being slightly over the cap doesn't count. Larry H. said multiple times that being in the black was the most important goal. He never spent big to add a piece to the Stockton, Malone teams. Just added cheap vets at the end of their careers

The Deron led teams may have had a chance. They reached the WCF's and then declined after that. No significant FA was ever added. I already mentioned the Boozer/Millsap situation. But also remember the Millers let Matthews walk because he would have put the team in the tax.

And up until last season, DL gave Jazz fans teams with the 28th-30th lowest payrolls. Jazz never had a chance in many trade talks because they didnt have decent talent...like a few good vets on expiring contracts.

The organization talks big. Lindsey's running quote has been to have financial flexibility so Utah could be players in free agency. That has never happened because he puts his tail between his legs whenever the market for a good player goes beyond the bargain basement price.

I'll believe it when I see it, but not holding my breath that Dennis and the Jazz BOD will open their wallets. Utah will exceed the cap, but not the tax.

I would worry more about development than minutes if I were him... if all the dollars were equal. Go to Sacramento and get minutes... see if that raises your value... it won’t!

I think he could get full MLE and I’d be out at that price. He should go to Atlanta if there is still a Hawks University... on a one or two year deal.

Yeah, I'd rather go to Sacramento if I was in his position.

These things are true... we have operated at or close to the floor. We could have done one year spending around the fringes to improve and didn’t... we have sold second rounders... I love the millers as owners but they have been as tight with the money as any team... they called it flexibility... we will see how much they are willing to spend in a couple years. They haven’t had a lot of good reason the past 4 or so.
