The tipping point

You don’t know what the 23rd pick would’ve turned out to be, nor Allen for that matter.

The second pick is likely to be a good asset. Have you seen the protections on it? For starters, it would very complicated to trade a pick for something else at this point, but the pick is designed to convey in 2022 which is when the double draft is expected to occur and is also out enough that the Jazz could be in a retooling phase anyway. That is why Memphis did it.

Jae Crowder is a solid rotation player, central to our culture, and was part of our best lineups.

Korver was injured, and even as just a contract was worth having around if just to stretch.

It wasn’t any one thing, though, it was ALL of those things. Memphis didn’t give us Conley for nothing. If those assets were enough to trade for him, what else could they have been used for?

The way it played out WAS extremely messy. We lost Rubio paychologically for the homestretch of games and we still couldn’t field a known, best 5-Man unit (lineups are always contingent on contextual stuff because our roster has been dumb). It was all played very poorly.

Lastly, Dante Exum is bad at basketball and the Jazz are better when he is injured.

We can agree to disagree.

Let’s just hold hands and go for the ride for now. If Exum sucks or gets hurt, I’ll def join in bashing him. It’s fun. The kid’s a complete Nancy.

I think yes, perhaps. And isn’t this what often happens? Bish and Lebum join Wade in Miami and then Ray Allen joins...at a discounted price too. Heck, Hayward joining the Celts is a good example.
This is what I brought in a post a few months ago and why he should have pulled the trigger at the deadline if all that tipped the scale was exum. I admit I was apprehensive of the move at the time but if he was Dennis' man all along he should have done it. The momentum produced by making moves like that help propel others to jump on board, sometimes for cheaper even. Imagine if the trade at the deadline got us to the WCF last year? Even more momentum. There was also reports that came out that big FAs wanted to come here but he felt it wasn't exactly what they wanted. One of the flaws of Dennis' flexibility caak baking obsession imo.

Also, doing it now rather than at the deadline seems much better and therefore smarter because:
1) We didn’t have to trade Exum or Favors
2) This moment is exciting to us and potential free agents. How exciting would it have been now after having lost in the first round the Rox? Not very.
We wouldn't have lost in the first round to the rockets. Hell, probably would have been the 3rd or 4th seed if we got Conley at the deadline.

Maybe we make the wcf. That might have been even more enticing to free agents

And the other 1st may likely turn into 2nds so who cares.

It won't. It's pretty much a guarantee that the pick will be conveyed to Memphis as a first round pick in 2022. The year that high school kids will be able to go straight to the NBA. It's the best asset we gave up imo

This is wishful thinking imo. The Rox handed us our asses. They completely owned us. Conley (and losing Favors) does not improve us so much that we’d all of a sudden beat them in a best of seven.

We wouldn’t have been in a series with them.

Nah, the tipping point is Tony Jones. Without him there ain't no rumors lol

This, but unironically. When your main sources of rumors or news was Peter Vecsey, like in the late 90's, You only get news on New York, Chicago, LA, and Boston. Nobody else was even televised. Now with the access fans have to every game and reporters that cover ALL of the beats, you will start to see a little more parity in coverage and opportunities for smaller markets. So, no, not Tony Jones specifically, but yes, everything he represents. Do something exciting, people will hear about it.

How’s that?

We were phenomenal down the stretch. To assume we would’ve been 1-2 games better is a little presumptuous given the loss of Favors and chemistry adjustments.

We got a legit really strong pg. Questioning it, as Utah fans who never get strong free agents, is silly.

Some here are the only ones questioning it. It’s being more than just a little nit picky. No one nationally is.

We needed a big upgrade and got one by losing picks which are completely hit or miss, Grayson Allen who was terrible most of the year, 38 y/o Korver and a really solid player in Crowder. A smart GM does that every time.

Now it’s about how we upgrade the roster even more given certain cap elements and the assets we have left.

Cross your fingers that Exum is healthy, found out a way to stay that way ala Ilgauskas who took a while iirc, and permanently turns the corner like he started to do.

I disagree. The rockets played poorly. Neither team could shoot. The games were close. We just sucked more than they did. Rubio was not good (20.0% from 3) and so conley in place of rubio would be enough for a few points better each game at least. And again, these games were close. A few points would have been huge.
Thats not even taking into account for his needing to be guarded closer than rubio helping out donovan and joe (that was the worst i ever saw joe play)

Plus if you remember the last 2 nights of nba regular season games involving portland and rockets and okc had insane things happen that the odds were like 0.00001 percent chance of for us to end up matched up with the rockets.
Well i think conley would have got us at least one more win down the stretch. Then we dont play the rockets in the first place.

Loss of favors? We all believe the trade was exum, rubio, and picks (plus filler)

You’re right.

Maybe I should just go MIA for a few days. It’s frankly unbelievable to me that people are gonna poopoo this trade as if it was some foregone conclusion that we were gonna get a big free agent, as if we get them all the time.
