Elson I believe has a guaranteed contract so we would still have to pay him if we waive him. So he will not be waived unless he has a serious injury. But, absolutely I will be surprised if we dont try to shed some salary at some point before the trade deadline.
 
Houston cut a big that had pretty good DLeague numbers and was a second round draft pick the year SAP was picked. I'm assuming he heads back to the DLeague and that could be a body to bring in if need be. Houston signed him at the end of the year and I'm not sure why because they didn't give him a run in preseason at all.

First off, the Jazz only pay Elson the salary for a second year player ($854K), not the $1.2M quoted above. The league pays the difference, and only the $854K is included in team salary and LT calculations. Second, players who sign as free agents are counted as second year players ($854K) in LT calculations, even if they make less.

If the Jazz cut Elson and signed a rookie from the D-League right at the middle of the season, they would save $190K (half year's salary difference). No difference in the luxury tax.

This is a great deal that The NBA has been running for some time now in order to keep veteran players in the league. I believe this is the first time Utah has ever taken advantage of it.
 
Tough call for Sloan. For offense now, keep Gaines and use CJ and Price as b/u SGs, though neither exclusively. For defense at SG now, gotta keep Jeffers. For upside, I'd go with Thompson. Now watch him keep Nichols <grin>... They all looked like they can play in the NBA, so I won't gripe with how Sloan sees it...
I'd be very surprised if they dumped Elson; they finally add another big, and turn right around and dump him?? No way... Yes, I have read he's got a 2-year guaranteed contract too...

Sure about the 2 years? I certainly thought it was for one year. I hope we did not sign him for two years.
 
New league rules say that your last three cuts' rights are owned by your D-League affiliate. They will cut Thompson and Gaines and Jeffers last. Keep the minimum.
