The Utah Plan: What Derrick Favors's Extension Means for the Jazz - Zach Lowe (Grantland)

"They didn't get "nothing" for Jefferson and Paul Millsap. They got cap space, which they have since used to acquire two first-round picks from Golden State, and now to re-sign Favors without worrying about what it does to their cap sheet."

Thank you, ZL: How many national hoops reporters completely missed this important point? He must look around at his peers and wonder how he was surrounded by such idiots.
He hated that Golden State trade, and argued that the Jazz would have been better off using their cap space to re-sign Millsap and wait for better trade opportunities to present themselves.

I have never thought of it that way. Everyone right now is saying that Millsap's contract is making him the most tradeable player out there right now. I wonder what we would have been able to get for him?

He's also an *** on Twitter.

However, I still think he does his research and his articles are good and he doesn't talk in broad generalities. He seems to be the only writer who actually analyzes games and players. Doesn't use "needs to play with more fire" or "dude knows how to win" blather.

That's being awfully generous. I have never encountered a more ****-y (rhymes with blunt, starts with c) sports journalist on twitter. It's even worse when he tries to be funny-- IE mentioning (again, for the 50th time) that Jazzfanz were obsessed with George v. Hayward in a completely unrelated article. I called him out for it, and he blocked me. Classic Zach Blowe.

What irks me the most is that I was a huge, huge Zach Lowe homer. Of all national journalist who come out with consistent content, he's by far the best as far as meat-and-potatoes is concerned. But god-damn, he is just absolutely brutal on twitter.

I recall that article being one of his not-so-great ones, over the course over the past few months. This recent Favors one is quite good though.

Yep. In both the comments AND on his twitter I commented about how he was misconceptualizing (probably not a word) opportunity cost. He's a poor interviewer as well (although his interview of LMA is entertaining...on youtube fwiw). I still read just about everything he writes.

It's a good article for the general public, but didn't teach me anything I didn't know already about Favor's or how his value should be assessed.

I can see it all now:

GSTankers fall apart due to their history of injury and miss the playoffs. Jazz land two of the top 5 picks in the 2014 draft including the #1 pick (Hoopshype is prophetic).

Utah drafts Wiggins AND Parker.

The roatation is:
Favors/Gobert
Kanter/Evans
Parker/Hayward/Rush
Wiggins/Burks
Burke/Neto

with a max free agent of your choice (I'd go after a PF or PG). That's 12 players so adda scrub or two to enjoy the ride.

Then just to show how ruthless he can be Lindsey goes out and pries Thibs away from Chicago.

One can dream, eh? Thibs? Wow, that would take some prie bar. What do you think he could offer?

Last night in chat people were linking articles showing that Thibs and the Chicago FO are not buddy buddy right now. Thibs is a good defensive coach. He would do wonders with guys like Hayward, Kanter and Favors.

They had the best record in the league a few seasons ago and still jerked him around with an extension. Not surprising there are issues.

That would just be amazing if Utah snatched him.

Thibs is a good defensive coach.

Small understatement. That's like saying Bill Walsh was a "good" offensive coach.

Thibs is a fantasttic defensive coach. He won a ring for the Celts, has the Bulls in the hunt everytime. I was way impressed how the Bulls competed last year in the PO without their all-star.

Wow. Would you take Wiggins and Parker, seeing how they are both wings? I think I would go Randle and Wiggins. You know both Kanter and Favors have big flaws in their game, and if you had Randle/Kanter/Favors you could always move a big for a beavy of riches.

Also, I think the Jazz might be thinking what you are thinking as far as Thibbs goes. Maybe that is why they brought Corbin back. They don't think Thibbs will last too long in Chicago and want to be in a position to grab him up when he is fired. He would be perfect for this team.

Also, Lindsay has spoken two or three times about how they love what Chicago is doing with their defense and how they are modeling their defensive strategy after Chicago's.

OK fine. Understatement. Still the point stands.

I would have shower sex with Beantown if it meant having Tom Thibodeau as head coach for the Utah Jazz.

I'd take both. Parker can play some PF and is a shooter. Wiggins is a driving SG. They are indeed both wings. That would also do more to strengthen our bench than adding a PF would. kanter and Favors do have holes but they are different holes. Is Randle a complete (see offense and defense) player? Or are we mearly drafting one guy that is a duplicate of some one we already have? Serious questions as I do not know.

I chose Parker over Randle also for his shooting. Having Hayward. Rush, Parker, Burks and Burke will open things up for Favors, Kanter, Evans, Gobert and Burks and Wiggins when he drive to the hoop.

As far as Thibs goes. Well I would be thrilled to see him take the extremely young, diverse, talented and hungry group in my scenario and mold them into an elite team.

What will happen is Thibbs will be fired after the All-Star game. The Jazz will snap him up. We will have about 12 wins at the time. We will go an a tear and instead of getting a top 3 pick, will get around 8-9. lol.

And having taught the core defense and how to win games? Done!
