The Wheel of Time (Amazon)

It all just looks to clean and fake in the previews. When I look at all the fantasy adaptations to tv, GOT is the only one that did a great job despite the so-so ending. The problem with most fantasy is they have poor acting, cheap editing and awful storylines. These previews felt more Shannara-ish than GOT, which is not good. Hopefully the actually show is decent, but the Tomatometer does not bode well. Of all the major epic fantasy series I have read, WOT sits at the bottom, so if it sucks, I don't really care. Like Fish, I had a hard time reading these, but I did finish the series, mostly because I took the time to read the first 5 or 6 that I burdened through to the end.

Love GOT books. I read the first 4 around 2006. I tried re-reading, but now the tv characters are all I see in my head. Kinda ruins the experience a bit. Ended up putting it back on the kindle shelf for now.

I was really looking forward to the Kingkiller Chronicles, but could see how that series could easily be butchered on the screen. Even unfinished, I have been able to re-read it a number of times and still enjoy it. Really good writing. Like GOT, it is too bad it will likely never be finished. And at this stage, even if GRRM publishes, I'm not sure I'll read it. He really has no motivation to finish at this point.

Yeah, considering the reviews I read, I'll just sit and wait to see if it turns into some kind of classic through the second season and pick it up then. As it stands, it feels like we're all inundated with stuff to watch anyways.

I've been having a laugh reading some of the negative reviews, actually. It's more a comparison to Game of Thrones because that's all they can think of right now. This series is so different from Game of Thrones that it's nuts, but that's the measuring stick.
Should be interesting to see if anything changes with subsequent seasons.
This is the copium version of me before I watched The Shyamalan Last Airbender movie. LOL

I have read all 5 of the Song Of Fire and Ice series (GOT) multiple times and absolutely love them. So so good. But the stupid author will never finish them and for that I kind of hate him. Plus now that I have watched the HBO series im guessing that the final two books wouldn't be as good as they would have been if finished pre HBO series.

I watched season one of GOT on HBO then read all the books before season 2 came out. There are some legitimately amazing parts of those books that I'll remember forever.

I'm with you, though. I get that GRRM doesn't necessarily owe us anything but at some point you've got to actually just do it. I honestly think the success of the HBO series made him nervous about putting out something that wasn't an all-universe masterpiece so he sort of seized up and started forcing things and then second and third-guessing things.

But he's also got so many different threads that have been diverging throughout the books. He has to find a way to weave those back together that isn't just flat out dumb. It might not even be possible. If he's stuck on plot points or character reintegration I wish he'd get some advice and just allow it to not be perfect. I'd rather have him finish his books than anyone else. Although I bet he has enough material for a decent writer (or writers, such as James SA Corey) to finish it in acceptable manner.

But yeah, at this point, I've stopped even expecting book 6.

I wish he wouldn't have written about the martells of sunspear. **** got too far spread at that point and screwed things up. Should have kept it to the mainland areas and the iron islands. There are some cool characters in Dorne and some good parts of the story/plot but there was already enough going on and the addition of dorne just made it too complicated.

Audience reviews are pretty good early on.

81% on RT based on 101 ratings.
9.1 on IMDB based on 512 ratings.

This is why he will never finish it. He let it get way too spread out and convoluted. I saw an interview with him where he simultaneously said he'll finish it within 3 years and also that he will not finish it because he basically doesn't know where to go. He would do well, imo, to pull a Patterson and get ghost writers to finish it.

At this point it makes me think too much of the gawd-awful Shannara tv show. What a dismal pile of wet dog crap that was. I hope this one ends up being better.

I only watched the first episode, but most of the acting, camerawork and shallow character development so far makes me agree with you. Shannara could have been awesome. Elfstones is a great book.

Wasn't expecting this to be GOT. Different type of fantasy, but the character development made that show, and WOT is missing that aspect.

Shows that a $10mm budget can't overcome bad story adaption or using made for tv directors. Hope it gets better.

Yeah I am expecting an after-school-special vibe from what I have heard. Not too thrilling.
