In reading Jazzfanz it seems like everyone has already given the spot to Tibor or Withey. I think Cooley proved himself in the minutes he got last season. At the worst, he didn't hurt the Jazz on either end. At his best, he was a difference maker rebounding the ball. I don't know anything about Tibor or Withey but I'd like to know what everyone on Jazzfanz who has them picked over Cooley does. I am not trying to argue but trying to learn about why those two are so much better. Thanks for anyone who can respond.

Cooley is probably the worst defender on the team and he fouls at an alarming rate. He is kind of like Kanter with his defensive awareness, but he gives more effort (which mostly just results in hard fouls) and has less length.

I think he can make a NBA roster somewhere though. At worst he goes back to the D-League and dominates some more and gets some more 10 day contracts. Not sure how much sticking power he has though since he really can't finish well.
 
Gobert is the clear starter. Not even debatable. Pleiss will be on the team due to his contract, so his spot is secure.

I think Cooley and Withey will directly compete for that final spot. 3 spots and 4 men. 2 spots and 2 men are secure.
 
Pleiss is clearly better than Cooley, based on what I saw in Eurobasket. The guy has great length and a great shooting touch. I think he shot around 90 % from the FT line during Eurobasket. While he needs more strength, he was not a pushover in the games I saw.

So far as Withey, based on film I have seen, the guy can protect the rim and has good mobility, and he's 7-0. I like Cooley, but don't see how he can beat out either of them. Maybe Withey because I haven't seen enough of him to make a good comparison.
 
In response to the OP, let me just say I like Cooley. While it's true Cooley is a good rebounder, high-effort player and can piss off opponents, he just isn't that skilled in other areas. He is also just 6'9". Pleiss has shown some great offensive skills. Withey is a very good shot-blocker. Both are at least 7'0".

Even with a losing record last season, Utah is now to the point where good players are going to be let go. Case in point is Evans. I loved Jeremy Evans as a player and for his work in the community and with Jr. Jazz. But Utah is just too deep to keep him. And Johnson is likely a training camp casualty - unless Withey (or Millsap) are cut. Johnson could be a decent role player on many teams. But there aren't enough roster spots. This team has incredible depth at every position.

Pleiss is a rookie the Jazz intentionally brought over. Withey is a proven NBA player, a potential defensive presence. Cooley is neither. He's the odd man out.

I think we are going to get a pretty healthy dose of Pleiss this year. Pleiss is a their above both Withey and Cooley. The battle for a spot is between Withey and Cooley and I wouldn't be surprised by either of the getting it. I lean toward Cooley because he can play multiple positions and has put in the time here.

How does that make any sense? None of those guys have PROVEN to be good backups, not one of them. So to say we have good depth when we don't have a starting caliber pg or a proven backup is ridiculous.

This.
Stifle is correct that we have great team depth...... But not at the pg position.

Now we could find out that we do indeed have great depth at point guard if these guys turn out to be better than we think, but as of right now we have one crappy pg and two guys we know nothing about really
 
I think Burke has shown that he is a decent back up, Cotton is a great third stringer. So I don't think Stifle is that far off the mark tbh.
