This team stinks

Just three games ago we played pretty well. Being such a new team it's going to take more than a couple of months to gel. I think if we can get Clarkson, Sexton and THT to embrace more of a pass-first mentality the guys will be more likely to give full effort. We need to use up the shot clock. It must be deflating for the guys to watch Clarkson play hero-ball and fail.

I think holding out hope that Clarkson changes the way he plays is fools gold. He is who he is.

Problem is, Clarkson has such a shallow bag that he cannot have 25% usage rate as a starter in a good team. Every time he gets the ball he either shoots directly or goes for dribble penetration without a plan where he doesnt throw early passes EVER let alone go in with intentions to draw defenders and open up a kickout pass.

The tape is there. Every opponent we have played has aboslutely destroyed us by doing the most simple combo of "drive to draw help + kickout pass + open shot" against us over and over again, but our SGs still dont seem to know thats possible. They NEVER go in planning to pass, and even if the wide open pass to a wide open look is there right in front of them, they instead take some dumb *** fadeaway middy (THT), drive to the trees to get swatted (Sexton) or start rotating around their plant leg with no purpose until they are completely trapped (Clarkson).

Exactly. The winning offensive formula in today’s NBA is to find an open 3-point shooter by moving the ball around or by driving to the paint and passing the ball out. When you watch the best teams, you see this all the time. They use the ball movement and driving as tools to get the ball to an open 3-point shooter. I’m sure Hardy wants this, too, but his players are not doing it for him.

The word "intention" you use is the key word here. The best guards often drive to the paint with the sole intention of collapsing the defense and kicking the ball out. And they often already know at the start of their drive who they’re going to pass the ball to.

Ochai was the MVP of the NCAA championship game and was a lottery pick so the guy is not lacking talent. He also looked decent at the end of last season when the team was losing but keeping it close. I think a lot of the FUBAR rests with Hardy and his staff and the way they approached the season.

Yeah, the Rockets tried that. Blow it up, start a "youth movement" and build through the draft.

It turned into a **** show.

Now they have a roster full of guys like:

Reggie Bullock (32)
Dillon Brooks (27)
Jeff Green (37)
Aaron Holiday (27)
Jock Landale (28)
Victor Oladipo (31)
Fred VanVleet (29)

And their most promising young guy (Sengun) was a freaking 16th pick.

Definitly hard to getting good only by drafting. Draft is much more uncertain than before. If we look the last 10 years draft , a lot of players draft 1 to 10 never achieve what people tought. Even very promising players draft high like Zion, Ja, Wiseman did not turn ( yet) theirr team in a winning one. It not easy to build good team, we will have to be patient. I'm totally convinced for example that SA need 5 years minimum before getting good if they don't improve their roster with good experiences players. And this is assuming that Victor, Sochan, Vassel and others improve well.

Their rebuild really didn't end until they hire a competent coach. We ended our rebuild in 2016 the same way. The best player on the team(Sengun and Gobert) really didn't break out until he found a coaching staff who appreciate his talent.

OKC kinda validates his point though. Their best player SGA wasn't even drafted by them. And all but three players (Chet, Giddey and jalen Williams) in their current rotation are either none lottery picks(second round picks in fact), undrafted or FA signings, meaning years of tanking and sucking didn't really play a big role to their current success.

What a **** post. It didn't turn into a **** show. They were bad like they wanted to be and acquired a bunch of really good young talent. Then of course they didn't have full control over there future draft picks which impacted the speed of the rebuild and the offseason movement. Through the draft though they were able to acquire foundational pieces that should set them up for long term success.

The spurs will be very very good next year. They are set up to add another high lottery pick and have a great young core. I would expect them to be aggressive when going after solid role player types to round out the roster and compete immediately next year.
